Who are we looking for?

We are looking for experienced Healthcare Assistants (HCA) in Mental Health to join the NHS Professionals staff bank, to support a wide range of flexible shifts covering days, nights, and weekends.

We are looking to support the following Trusts in Greater Manchester:

  • Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

Popular shift patterns are available, such as 07.30 – 15.30 and 20.45 – 07.45, but our Trusts are open to different start/finish times and lines of work (e.g. short-shifts during school hours).

Pay Rates*:
Days: £9.65 per hour
Saturdays/Nights: £13.61 per hour
Sunday/Bank Hols: £17.66 per hour

*Pay rates may vary depending on Trust, experience, any incentives that are running, and are subject to change.

What will be your main responsibilities?

The role may involve, but not be limited to you performing the following:

  • Building relationships with patients to encourage trust, while listening to their needs and concerns
  • Ensuring that the patient is the prime focus when making decisions about their care and wellbeing
  • Assisting in the delivery of patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse
  • Assisting patients with compassion when undertaking normal activities of daily living whilst ensuring that privacy, dignity, and human rights are respected
  • Implementing holistic, culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgmental care from a pre-determined care plan for patients with a wide range of care needs
  • Monitoring patients' conditions and the results of treatment
  • Responding to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and attempt to understand the source of their discomfort
  • Helping patients manage their emotions through de-escalation techniques
  • Organising social events aimed at developing patients' social skills and helping to reduce their feelings of isolation
  • Providing routine patient care duties at own discretion in accordance with Trust policies, protocols, and guidelines
  • Participating in the taking and recording of observations under the direction of the Registered Nurse and report the results to the Nurse in charge
  • Using initiative when responding to changes in a patient’s condition within own sphere of practice
  • Recognising limitations and escalating concerns

To apply for this post, you will/have:

  • A minimum of 3 months experience as a Healthcare Assistant (Mental Health) or studying as a Student Nurse with at least 12 weeks’ clinical placements, studying towards a relevant Nursing degree
  • Be proficient in the delivery of care to patients
  • Assist in the delivery of patient care as directed by the nurse in charge of the unit/ward, undertaking duties and activities, with limited or indirect supervision
  • Carry out procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and standards
  • Ensure accurate records are kept in accordance with Trust guidelines
  • Undertake regular mandatory training*

*Depending on the Trust, you may require variable additional certification and skills.

Please note:

From 1 April 2022 it will become a legal requirement for health and social care staff who have direct, face-to-face contact with patients/service users to provide evidence of a complete course of an authorised COVID-19 vaccine unless they are exempt.

This requirement also extends to non-clinical staff not directly involved in patient/service user care, but who may have direct, face-to-face contact with patients/service users in the course of their work.

Applicants who fall within the scope of the legal requirements will be asked to evidence their vaccination status, or valid exemption, as part of the recruitment process.
