We are looking for a Legal Counsel – GLCM to join the Global GLCM Legal Team.  The successful candidate will provide expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to business stakeholders and colleagues to ensure that legal and reputational risks are identified, reported and mitigated appropriately. The successful candidate will be an accountable lawyer to the GLCM business on legal issues that the business encounters in an industry facing increasing regulation and globalisation.  This role will report to an Associate General Counsel.
 
The GLCM business, that this role will support, helps its clients who are mainly corporate treasurers and financial institutions to:  
  • move their cash (domestic and cross-border payments, managing payables and receivables);
  • to have (online) visibility, control, access to their cash often in multiple currencies and countries; and
  • to invest their cash, managing their liquidity to make sure their cash works hard for their business by providing products which optimise liquidity, maximise returns and increase efficiency.
Whether it is giving advice about market leading innovative payments solutions and products, simplifying our legal documentation, or supporting projects responding to industry or regulatory change, or projects driven by commercial strategy, the GLCM Legal team’s advice and experience is very much appreciated and we are treated as an integral part of multidisciplinary teams. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the expansive, increasingly diverse and complex payments sector along the way. The GLCM Legal team also supports Wholesale Digital Channels’ largest corporate online channels (including its desktop and mobile app and Treasury APIs) advising the business on the full product cycle and customer journey for global, innovative, digital products – from initial concept to operationalisation and terms and conditions to product demise.   
 
The GLCM Legal team play an important role in protecting HSBC Group’s reputation by identifying legal risks and helping to future-proof the organisation through the provision of robust and comprehensive legal advice to senior management, business lines and functions.
 
This role offers an opportunity to develop a diverse range of legal skills in a key business area.
Role Purpose:
  • To provide the Global, European and UK GLCM businesses and Wholesale Digital Channels, as well as our operations, risk and compliance colleagues, with prompt, commercial, practical and high quality legal advice and support;
  • To advise on legal developments and key regulations that impact GLCM;
  • To provide legal advice and support for strategic and long-term business and operational initiatives, including within the GLCM and Wholesale Digital Channels innovation agenda;
  • To provide legal support on complex negotiations of GLCM customer documentation including account terms and conditions and product specific documentation;
  • To provide legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that HSBC’s exposure to legal risk is identified, reported and mitigated and the execution of related operational strategies and initiatives are facilitated.
Requirements
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
  • Qualified lawyer with minimal PQE and relevant sector experience gained either within a financial institution or top tier private practice is essential;
  • Drafting and /or negotiations experience is highly desirable;
  • Experience of providing prompt and practical legal guidance, dealing with ambiguity, considering various perspectives and identifying any issues requiring escalation to seniors;
  • Big picture understanding of, or an interest in learning about, payments architecture, and familiarity with banking and financial services regulatory law is desirable;
  • Experience in payments / cash management / digital payment products is an advantage but not essential;
  • Experience of working on commercial or regulatory change projects is an advantage but not essential;
  • Ability to prioritise – a self-starter, able to operate independently with good organisational skills;
  • Communication and inter-personal skills and the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively both within the immediate and wider HSBC teams is essential.
The base location for the role is 8 Canada Square, Canary Wharf London. Hybrid working applies. Candidates based outside London will be considered.
