Junior Commercial Lawyer - Digital Law - Open to flexible working in Manchester

Job description

The client facing Law team at EY is a fast growing and dynamic integrated part of EY.  That means opportunities for our people every day - and a need for talented, flexible professionals to join us to fuel our growth tomorrow.  Become part of our cohesive and expanding team and develop your career within a global organisation looking to disrupt the legal market.

EY Law in the UK&I was formed in 2015 and became part of an EY global network of more than 3500 lawyers across 89+ jurisdictions.

The opportunity

We are currently seeking junior solicitors to join our Commercial and Digital Law team within EY Law in London, Belfast and Manchester.  The roles are client facing.

The Commercial and Digital Law team is a cross-site (London and Manchester) team and part of our wider Law practice, which includes M&A, Corporate Structuring, Employment and Energy lawyers.  It deals with a broad range of matters, including: commercial contracts, IT and tech/digital law, data protection and privacy, non-contentious soft IP matters and regulatory advice.  We service large and multi-national clients and seek to provide complementary legal services to these clients, either directly or via multi-disciplinary teaming with other parts of EY (e.g. Consulting), with a view to offering these clients a complete professional services solution.

We work across all sectors and with our counterparts across the global EY Law network to provide multi-jurisdictional advice.

Your key responsibilities

  • Delivering exceptional client service through consistently producing high quality work and demonstrating technical competence and insights.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with other EY professionals who contribute to our commercial and digital law offering.
  • Working on client accounts, including assisting with the preparation of proposals, participating in pitches and contributing to the efficient and successful delivery of legal services to the client.
  • Managing client matters, including client care requirements and financial management, attending client meetings and building relationships with our existing and new clients.
  • Managing possible leads from other areas of the practice and contributing to winning new work.
  • Promoting our work through participating in team and firm events, giving internal and external presentations and producing expert articles for publication.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Strong technical and drafting skills (appropriate to PQE level) are essential.
  • Effective time management, including an ability to remain calm when under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • An innovative mindset (supporting the use of technology to improve service delivery).
  • Excellent communicator in a range of situations, both written and oral.
  • Enthusiastic team player with the ability to integrate with new teams (and cross-location) quickly.
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and pragmatically.

To qualify for the role, you must satisfy the following criteria

  • Experienced UK-qualified solicitor with 0 to 3 years’ PQE experience, some of which should have been gained in the UK at a reputable firm.
  • Commercially aware.
  • Commercial law experience (or at least awareness) of some of the following:
    • Intra-group contracting arrangements (particularly in the context of group transfer pricing arrangements; an understanding of transfer pricing rules would be beneficial).
    • Soft intellectual property (non-contentious), including IP licensing, copywriting of software and IP portfolio management.
    • Data protection and privacy, including a working knowledge of both EU and UK data protection laws.
    • Corporate due diligence.
    • Large scale contract review/novation projects and project management skills.
    • Competition law/state aid.
    • Regulatory and trade compliance (e.g. advising businesses in the context of geopolitical changes such as Brexit).
    • Consumer rights and protection.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Ability to build strong client relationships, with experience of working with demanding clients across a wide spectrum of size and activities.
  • Relationship management skills, with the ability to manage client/stakeholder expectations.
  • Project management skills, including planning and prioritising work, meeting deadlines and monitoring your own and the team’s budget and time.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on specialised areas of law and be keen to continue developing legal skills and engaging in new areas of work.

What we look for

This role is suitable for candidates who have worked in established law firms or in-house legal departments and who are looking to expand their career by being part of a growing team in a global organisation.  We are looking for highly talented and motivational people, who want to continue to develop themselves and others when they join the firm.
