Job description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Workshop Management:

    • Plan, allocate, and supervise daily workloads for workshop staff.

    • Ensure that all repairs, servicing, and inspections are completed safely, efficiently, and to manufacturer standards.

    • Coordinate with operations and site teams to prioritize breakdowns and maintenance tasks.

  • Technical Leadership:

    • Diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults on a wide range of heavy plant machinery.

    • Provide expert technical support and mentoring to workshop and field service engineers.

    • Ensure correct use of diagnostic tools, equipment, and service procedures.

  • Quality & Safety:

    • Maintain strict adherence to company health, safety, and environmental policies.

    • Conduct safety checks, toolbox talks, and ensure workshop compliance with regulatory standards.

    • Inspect and sign off completed work, ensuring quality control and compliance with service records.

  • Administration & Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate job cards, service reports, and equipment maintenance logs.

    • Monitor parts inventory, order supplies, and liaise with suppliers and vendors.

    • Provide regular updates to management on workshop performance, costs, and equipment condition.

  • Team Development:

    • Train and mentor apprentices and junior technicians.

    • Foster a positive, professional, and safety-focused workshop culture.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Trade qualification as a Heavy Plant Mechanic, Diesel Fitter, or Mechanical Engineer (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent).

  • Detailed hands-on experience working with heavy construction, ground engineering or related equipment (Ground Improvement, Drilling Rigs, Piling Rigs, Large Concrete Pumps or related)

  • Previous supervisory or foreman experience in a workshop environment.

  • Strong diagnostic skills in hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.

  • Proficient with service management software and maintenance record systems.

  • Valid driver's license; additional licenses (e.g., HGV, forklift) an advantage.
