Are you an inspiring leader with a passion for science, education, and public impact? The Institute of Physics (IOP) is seeking a Lead for Scotland to champion our mission, build influential partnerships, and drive meaningful progress for physics across Scotland.

As the national society for physics in the UK and Ireland, and the professional body for physicists worldwide, the IOP is dedicated to unlocking the potential of physics to benefit society. Addressing the skills gap is a key part of the new strategy; promoting inclusion, strengthening research and innovation and ensuring the value of physics is widely understood.

The Lead for Scotland will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the IOP’s work across Scotland, ensuring programmes, policy engagement, and community initiatives reflect the country’s unique opportunities and challenges.

You will:

  • Lead and inspire a team delivering impactful education, policy and engagement work.
  • Build relationships with government, industry, academia and community partners.
  • Champion the voice of the Scottish physics community within IOP decision-making.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of the IOP’s business plan for Scotland.
  • Represent the IOP as a credible and influential voice in public, policy, and media discussions.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues and the Scottish Committee to align national priorities with IOP’s wider strategy.

This is a visible and influential position, ideal for someone who can combine strategic vision, political acumen, and a deep commitment to advancing science and education in Scotland. We’re looking for a confident, thoughtful, and collaborative leader who can inspire trust and deliver tangible impact. You’ll bring:

  • Deep understanding of Scotland’s political, educational, and innovation landscape.
  • A track record of influencing policy and driving cross-sector collaboration.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to represent IOP at the highest levels.
  • Experience managing teams and resources to deliver high-quality outcomes.

A background in science, education, or public affairs would be beneficial, but above all, you’ll bring intellectual curiosity, creativity and a drive to make a difference.
