Consultant Intensivist/Anaesthetist in Glasgow

Job description

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and forward thinking intensivist / anaesthetist for a post as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. 

The successful applicants will be joining the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospitals Crosshouse (UHC) and University Hospital Ayr (UHA), which currently comprises 40 Consultants, 15 SAS doctors and 15 Trainee Anaesthetists. The post will involve working as part of the intensive care team based at UHC. Other components of the job plan would typically include delivering anaesthesia for theatre sessions however sessions within other departments such as Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine can be considered depending on the training and qualifications of the successful candidate. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop sub-specialty interests to complement the existing expertise and interests of the department. 

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care provides services in UHC, which is a 539-bedded general hospital located on the outskirts of Kilmarnock, including the co-located Ayrshire Maternity Unit, and UHA, which lies to the east of Ayr.

There are well developed plans to reform the way intensive care is delivered in Ayrshire. At the current time there is an intensive care facility on each acute site with an additional Covid ICU in operation on the UHC site.

UHC provides a comprehensive service for Orthopaedics and Trauma, General Surgery (including Upper GI Surgery and Colorectal surgery) Breast Surgery, and also hosts several area-wide services such as all Paediatrics (Medical and Surgical), all Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Maxillofacial Surgery and one national service – the Cochlear Implant Service. This is provided in a modern theatre suite comprising 11 well-equipped theatres.

UHA provides an extensive range of both elective and emergency surgical and medical service. Surgical work is delivered across 8 theatres, and specialties on site here include general surgery, urology, vascular and ophthalmology. A focus on elective orthopaedic surgery is being developed on the site, with expertise and innovative practice being used drive improved quality and efficiency.

Both sites have excellent transport links to the vibrant city of Glasgow which is only 30-45 minutes away, and are also within 15 minutes of Prestwick Airport. Ayrshire is great place to live and work, with a fantastic a coastal location.  This offers exciting leisure opportunities including water-based activities such as sailing and kite-surfing, exceptional road and off-road cycling opportunities in the ‘Ayrshire Alps’ and ‘7 Stanes’ cycling areas, along with several championship golf courses within 30 minutes of the hospitals.  

The Terms and Conditions of Service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004 and the post is offered on a 10 programmed activity basis, although opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities subject to service requirements.  The post will involve participation in the Intensive Care on call rota in UHC, which operates as a 1:12 rota. In addition, the post involves participation in a rota for inter-hospital transfer of critically unwell patients. Applications from individuals who may wish to work on a part-time or job share basis will be considered.  

Applicants will be appropriately experienced, with full GMC Registration and current Licence to Practice, and be on the GMC Specialist Register.  Those trained in the UK should have evidence of Higher Specialist Training leading to CCT in ICM or anaesthesia, or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.  Non UK applicants require to demonstrate equivalent training.
