Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine to join the Tayside Palliative Care Team. The post will be based at Cornhill Macmillan Centre, Perth Royal Infirmary, Perth.
This post represents an exciting opportunity to work in the specialist palliative care unit, community facing services and the acute hospital setting. Teams for all three settings are based in Cornhill Macmillan Centre and form part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team.
Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service
NHS Tayside serves a population of approximately 415,000 people over the local councils of Perth and Kinross (151,000), Dundee (148,000) and Angus (116,000). It also accommodates patients from North East Fife (74,000). It is a large geographical area with its population scattered over an area of approximately 100 miles by 80 miles. Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service aims to provide quality care appropriate to location [home, palliative care unit, nursing home or hospital] and level of complexity. Education and telephone advice for all health professionals are core activities of the service. The Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service is hosted within the Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership but operates across four main clinical hubs:
Angus Specialist Palliative Care Service, Roxburghe House & Dundee Specialist Palliative Care Service, Ninewells Specialist Palliative Care Service and Perth and Kinross Specialist Palliative Care Service.

Cornhill Macmillan Centre
Cornhill Macmillan Centre is a 10-bed purpose built NHS palliative care unit in the grounds of Perth Royal Infirmary, Perth. It has an experienced Multidisciplinary Team and also serves as a base for the hospital palliative care team and the community facing team, providing out-patient facilities and Day-Care services. There is an education team who is providing a variety of education events across and is linked with the Education Facilitators based in Dundee.
There are strong links with Dundee Medical School with delivery of undergraduate education and a variety of post-graduate education events organised and delivered for Foundation doctors, GP trainees, Specialty Trainees and other Health and Social Care professionals.
The successful applicant will work closely with the two consultants and two other specialty doctors, and an excellent multidisciplinary team. Other members of the Cornhill team include an FY2, a GPST2 and occasional Specialty Trainees who rotate through Cornhill Macmillan Centre as part of a Tayside wide training programme. The post will involve working on a rotational basis across the in-patient unit, hospital and community teams. Morning review of in-patients in Cornhill occurs on a 1:5 rota at weekends and it is envisaged this will be extended to 1:6.
Within the wider NHS Tayside Palliative Care Service there are a number of innovative developments taking place. The Macmillan Tayside Managed Clinical Network for Palliative and End of Life Care includes sub-groups of Education, Research / Quality Improvement, End of Life Care, Audit / Data Collection and Non-Cancer Palliative Care. Other initiatives include: an Acute Palliative Care Unit (3 beds) based in Ninewells Hospital, a Renal Supportive Care service, an Interstitial Lung Disease Supportive Care Service, the ECHO (Enhanced Community Healthcare Outcomes) education project, a Dementia QI Project in collaboration with Health Improvement Scotland, a Master of Public Health (Palliative Care Research) Course and research links with the University of Dundee.
Perth is a beautiful city and provides a high quality of life. Its central location allows good links with Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, yet its close proximity to beautiful countryside and coast offer a perfect blend of urban and rural lifestyle.
Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and have experience in Palliative Medicine.
