Job description
The opportunity
The Knowledge Lawyer (“KL”) will be responsible for creating tools and materials to support the needs of the global Practice Areas of EY Law (Transactional Law, Employment Law, Digital Law & Data Privacy, Corporate & Commercial Law, and Financial Services) in order to help increase the quality, consistency and cost-effectiveness of the advice that the firm delivers to its clients.
Your key responsibilities
The KL will work with the Practice Area Leaders, Member Firm Knowledge Champions and other stakeholders across EY Law to identify the Knowledge needs of the Practice Areas, prioritise them, and create solutions to address them. The priorities will be agreed from the responsibilities listed below and reviewed on a regular basis.
-
Standard form precedents. Work with the Practice Area Leaders to ensure that each member firm has in place standard form templates for the most frequently used documents, including guidance and/or practice notes to accompany the templates. This will involve producing generic “global” templates for adaptation by Member Firms and working with lawyers with appropriate subject-matter expertise to create content at a local level. Ensure that they are maintained on an ongoing basis to reflect the latest law and market practice. Where appropriate, work with the firm’s specialists to automate the templates in order to streamline the drafting process further. Monitor template usage to inform future development.
- Knowhow collection. Engage with Practice Area Leaders, Member Firm Knowledge Champions and other stakeholders across EY Law to encourage the collection of relevant work product and share this for the benefit of all Member Firms. Support the creation and implementation of best practices to ensure that all lawyers are contributing to the knowhow collection. Ensure that knowhow content is reviewed from time to time and irrelevant or out-of-date material is removed. Monitor knowhow usage to inform future development.
- Legal training. Work with the Practice Area Leaders to devise and implement a training plan to ensure that all of our legal professionals have the skills that they need. In collaboration with the Talent team, manage the preparation and delivery of training to lawyers across EY Law on technical legal topics, “soft” legal skills (such as drafting, deal management and negotiation) and relevant KM systems. Use different forums and media – including in-person events, webinars and e-learning tools – as appropriate.
- Current awareness. Put in place a structure and process to ensure that lawyers are kept up to date on relevant legal and regulatory developments. Ensure that updates are prepared and delivered on a prompt and timely basis and create forums for informal knowledge sharing across EY Law.
- KM systems. Support the development and implementation of KM tools and systems, acting as an internal advocate and ensuring that legal professionals across EY Law use them appropriately. Gather feedback from lawyers and ensure this is properly actioned.
- Thought leadership. Work with the Practice Area Leaders to identify key topics for thought leadership activities. Work to understand client requirements and then monitor and spot industry issues and trends and highlight these to lawyers. Where appropriate, draft client briefings, articles or other thought leadership collateral for external use.
Skills and attributes for success
- Qualified lawyer with at least five years’ experience of commercial practice
- Previous experience of working as a Knowledge Lawyer or in another KM role, as well as experience of working in an international organisation.
- Fluent English speaker, with outstanding drafting and communication skills. Other languages would be desirable.
- A proactive mindset, with an ability to work with a high degree of independence.
- Able to build effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders at all levels of the organisation and navigate a complex, matrixed environment with skill and tact.
- Committed to providing the highest levels of service to clients and colleagues.
- Comfortable with using technology and able to apply an innovative mindset to problems.
