Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Dietitian with an interest in eating disorders to join our growing team at The Brighton and Hove Clinic. The Brighton and Hove Clinic is a well-established 16 bed specialist inpatient service for young people with eating disorders. We pride ourselves on providing a high standard of person-centred care for young people who are experiencing eating difficulties.

The post holder will join a specialist multi-disciplinary team to provide individualised nutrition support to the young people on our unit. They will work collaboratively with individuals in our care, their families and the multidisciplinary team to promote physical and nutritional recovery and to foster more positive food relationships.

The Brighton and Hove Clinic is currently collaborating with Kings College London and The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute (THIS) at Cambridge University in a Dietetic-led project to improve our knowledge around NG Feeding under restraint and dining room support. As part of your role, you will actively engage with the research fellow to support their successful completion of the project and ongoing implementation of its findings.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be supported regionally and will have access to a variety of training and online courses to support your career development and growth. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • The implementation of appropriate nutrition care plans, considering; risks, stage of recovery, any co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions and cultural norms.
  • A weekly progress review and feedback to the multi-disciplinary team in ward rounds
  • One to one nutrition counselling sessions to determine: eating behaviours, beliefs and attitudes about food and health, rationale for food choices, factors affecting eating behaviour and nutrition status. These sessions will also be used for exploring stage of change and to explore ambivalence and barriers to behaviour change.
  • Mealtime support: The dietitian will act as a key link between the nursing team, the catering department, and the MDT, leading on the management of the dining room and nutrition support strategies on the unit.
  • Delivery of the Nourish to Flourish psychoeducation group, which is set up to help young people understand their eating disorders and critically explore their beliefs about food and bodies.
  • One to one family support, helping families understand the complex relationship between food and health, as well as strategies for supporting their young person to eat at home.
  • Attendance at professional meetings with external agencies as required.
  • Ward based support to the nursing and support staff, leading on nutritional care on the ward and in the dining room.
  • Work collaboratively with the PhD Fellow to support their successful completion of the project and ongoing implementation of its findings.

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics or Equivalent
  • Registered Dietitian with the HCPC
  • Member of the British Dietetic Association (desirable)
  • Member of the BDA Mental Health Specialist Group (desirable)
  • An Interest in Eating Disorders
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to work autonomously and within a team
  • Good time management
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize case load
  • Professional and patient focused approach to food work
  • Ability to recognise and manage challenging situations in a calm and professional manner

Prior experience working in eating disorders is desirable, but not essential for this position. We would consider applications from interested professionals without experience, who would be keen to undertake additional post-graduate training in eating disorders.
