Job Title: Site Reliability Engineer

Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

 

Role Description:

Cybersecurity Science and Analytics empowers Cybersecurity in protecting the bank by leveraging data and innovative capabilities to create effective and proactive security measures, as well as enabling data driven business decisions. The CS&A mission is critical to the protection of HSBC customers, the HSBC brand, HSBC information financial assets and ultimately shareholder value, through ensuring HSBC remains a market leader in protecting our customers and assets.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Designing, building, orchestrating and maintaining large scale robust cloud based big data and analytics environments from end to end, including data buses, storage (data warehouses and data lakes), and analytics/presentation layers.
  • Building support infrastructure and tooling to enable the above, including: Infrastructure Orchestration (Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and alerting systems, software version repositories (Github/Gitlab), and web application server infrastructure.
  • Deploying various cloud based products and services as requirements arise.
  • Scripting and programming related to building and maintaining the above systems.
  • Designing and applying appropriate security and compliance controls to the above infrastructure.
  • Effectively troubleshooting and responding to incidents related to our data infrastructure.
  • Diligently documenting work, and comfortable helping author tutorials and other support/onboarding documentation to enable other users to use said systems.
  • Effectively collaborating with other team members and colleagues throughout the enterprise.
  • Participation in special projects on behalf of HSBC and CS&A leadership.

 

Requirements

Essential Skillset/Experience:

  • A strong background in large scale data related cloud infrastructure. Preference will be given to those with experience in Microsoft Azure and multi-cloud environments
  • Experience building support systems, tools, and services in support of a robust cloud solution (e.g. monitoring, alerting, ticketing, CI/CD, software version repositories, email systems, web infrastructure)
  • Experience building cloud infrastructure in support of endeavours in the cyber security domain and understanding of cyber security principles, techniques used by advanced criminal and nation state adversaries, global financial services business models, regional compliance regulations and applicable laws.
  • Experience working in Agile or iterative development environments.
  • Experience with technologies like those found in this list: Azure Cloud, Azure IAM, Azure AD, Terraform, Nginx/Apache, Azure Compute, Azure Storage (esp. Data Lake Gen 2) and CosmosDB, Linux, Bash, PowerShell, Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch). Experience with SIEM and SOAR technologies, especially cloud based, is a significant asset.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and Automation tools: Terraform, Chef, Ansible, CloudFormation/ARM.
  • Systems – Understanding of hardware and software principles – storage technologies (SSD, HDD, NVMe), CPU architectures, Memory, Operating system principles (especially network stack fundamentals)
  • Network – Understanding of network protocols and network design.
  • Programming/Scripting – Ability to both script, and code solutions to SRE/DevOps problems.

 

The role will be based in Sheffield.
