Being a part of meaningful change is a feeling like no other. The care and support you provide as an Art Therapist help some of the most vulnerable people to communicate and express themselves as they build a brighter future. 

Working 18.75 hours a week, you will join Emerald Place Clinic based in Horley, Surrey where you will provide care for children and young people aged 12-18 years old who require residential care, working on tailored treatment programmes designed for the individual needs of each young person.

As an Art Therapist, you will be responsible for evaluating our young people’s reactions and behaviours during art therapy sessions, which will see you utilise your art and psychotherapeutic skills and techniques to help them improve their physical, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing. 

You will create one-to-one rapport with service users to discuss their interest and medical histories as you identify their needs, objectives and prefer forms of artistic expression to create innovative art therapy programs.

During your art therapy sessions, you will use various types of visual art, including drawing, sculpting, painting, ceramics, and clay modelling. This will see you discuss their artworks to evaluate the meaning and emotions behind the artworks and implement coping skills and strategies to enable them to deal with challenging and traumatic experiences.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll enjoy clinical supervision from a qualified Art Therapist to help you be the best you can be and will have access to a variety of training and online courses to support your career development and growth. 

As an Art Therapist you will be responsible for:

  • Attending multidisciplinary treatment team meetings
  • Ensuring art supplies and equipment are adequately stocked
  • Utilising research skills for audits, policy and service development and research 
  • Conducting group or family art therapy sessions
  • Supervising art therapy students and interns
  • Maintaining detailed records of service users' progress as well as observations made during art therapy sessions

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • Master's degree in Art Therapy or Counselling with additional coursework in Art Therapy
  • To be on the Healthcare Council Registration (HCPC)
  • Knowledge of visual art
  • Excellent observational and counselling skills
  • A passion for art
