Job description

Introduction

We are happy to offer flexible working opportunities - Job Share or Part Time Hours are available.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Clinical or Counselling psychologist to join an established inpatient multidisciplinary team in the centre of Hove. The Brighton and Hove Clinic is a specialist eating disorder unit for children and adolescents.  It is a Tier 4 service supporting young people with severe and complex eating disorders that have not responded to community treatment approaches.  The Brighton and Hove Clinic receive referrals from NHS CAMHS Tier 3 and Tier 4 Services.

The Brighton and Hove Clinic provides specialist multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment for children and adolescents (12- 18 years) with an eating disorder where behavioural, psychological, or emotional problems may have resulted in a severely restricted dietary intake. Our patients present with a variety of psychological difficulties including anorexia nervosa, depression, self-harm, and anxiety disorders. Our patients can also present with co-morbid attachment difficulties, ASC traits (both diagnosed and undiagnosed) and with emotion regulation difficulties. Interventions include individual therapy, systemic family therapy, therapeutic groups, meal support sessions and a psychoeducational parent support group.

The post holder will be required to contribute to a clinical psychology service within the multidisciplinary eating disorder team. You will be primarily responsible for the provision of individual therapy based on evidence-based approaches and may also be involved in the delivery of family and group interventions.

You will contribute to the comprehensive MDT assessment of patients’ difficulties and the development of individualised clinical formulations. As an individual therapist, you will support patients in relapse planning and liaise with community teams to support the safe discharge of young people back to the community. You will also be responsible for supporting the psychological thinking of the wider team, providing reflective practice, and delivering training to the nursing team.  You will have the opportunity to provide clinical supervision to assistant psychologists and trainees. The post-holder will be supervised by the Therapies Lead/Clinical Psychologist. The post will also include clinically related research and development, as well as clinical audit and evaluation.

The role is an exciting opportunity to join an established and passionate therapies team, whilst also contributing to the development of an individualised and patient-centred service committed to improving clinical practice and effectiveness. The successful candidate will also join a network of eating disorder therapists working for Elysium providing access to CPD, training and peer supervision. Previous experience of working in an eating disorder service is not essential, as we offer in-house training and offer external training opportunities to support staff development.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • To support the provision of the psychology service in the CAMHS eating disorder team, in collaboration with multidisciplinary team, and under the direction and supervison of the Therapies Lead/Clinical Psychologist
  • To participate fully with the multidisciplinary team and ensure that patients are fully engaged in their care pathway.
  • To provide psychological assessments of patients based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological (and neuropsychological) tests, self-report measures, rating scales direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the patient’s care.
  • To provide individualised and evidence-based individual psychological therapy to patients (e.g., CBT-E, AFT, FT-AN, CBT, DBT)
  • To facilitate and contribute to the development of evidence-based group initiatives
  • To provide staff reflective practice, consultation and training
  • To work with internal and external agencies to enhance treatment pathways for patients.
  • To support the team in conducting research, audit and evaluation, particularly in areas of clinical relevance that are aimed at improving quality of service and outcomes.
  • To attend clinical supervision
  • To attend monthly therapy meeting with the therapy team
This list of key responsibilities is not exhaustive, and the post holder may be required to undertake other relevant and appropriate duties as reasonably required.

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • 1-2 years post qualification experience
  • To either have an accredited Doctoral level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology, or due to qualify this year.
  • Professional registration with the appropriate body (e.g., Health Care Professions Council, BABCP) or qualification pending for newly qualified applicants
  • Experience (either pre-training, on training, or subsequently) of providing evidence-based interventions to adolescents and/or families
  • Knowledge of theory and practice of specialist psychological therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT, CFT, EMDR)
  • Please note experience in eating disorders is desirable but not essential. Due to the changing nature of eating disorder referrals and comorbid presentations with ASC, trauma and emerging personality disorders experience in either CAMHS, forensics or neurodevelopmental services is also highly desirable.
  • Competency in psychological assessment and formulation skills
  • Competency as regards risk assessment and management
  • Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively.
