Your new role National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Highways Improvement Engineer to join our Highways Improvements Team hear in the Southwest region of England. The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary role where they will lead on improvement schemes and initiatives that will directly affect those who use and live alongside the Strategic Road Network (SRN). This varied role is a prime opportunity to either continue you your development or use that wealth of experience you have built up whilst knowing your positively affecting peoples lives. You will work on projects that address identified problem areas on the road network including, Safety, Congestion, Severance and even freight facilities. You will need to be technically strong and be able to adapt to the changes in Need and dynamic Operational environment. Using a combination of internal and external resources you will design, support and develop feasibility schemes with engineering proposals demonstrating which are best value for money.

This role shall provide an excellent opportunity to apply your expert civil engineering knowledge, skills and significant experience to your specific discipline in highway infrastructure engineering. You will also be working with a team of expert Asset engineers managing Renewals programmes so you will also need to adapt or combined your proposals with other works that are being carried out on the SRN.

At National Highways you will have the opportunity to make a real difference for the customers that use and live alongside Englands biggest road networks. This role will be based on either our Bristol or Exeter office however as a flexible working organisation we also work from home or other locations subject to the needs of the business. There will be a requirement to travel between our offices and those of our stakeholders and partners in the region.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment. The role may be required to work unsociable hours.

What youll be leading on Identification and development of schemes to address Safety, Congestion, Community Severance and facilities issues such freight transport facilities. Developing a 5 year and beyond prioritised programme for identified schemes. Supporting internal teams technically including responses to public queries, third party applications and planning applications. Delegation of tasks to team members Development of task briefs and works orders, utilising the framework consultants and contractors to support the delivery of schemes. Support engineers, Project Managers, Service Delivery Managers and Route Managers to ensure appropriate schemes are being brought forward and reflect asset needs, priorities and strategies. Working collaboratively with other asset teams to cluster schemes together to provide efficiencies. Attending and leading external meetings with the public, councils and other key stakeholders to deliver and support the delivery of schemes in an efficient manor whether they are internal or external schemes. To be successful Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and/or with extensive experience, or equivalent. Hold a degree in relevant discipline, HND, or HNC with relevant experience, or equivalent experience. Expert knowledge in the application of Highways/Civil design standards ideally the majority of that experience will be in the use of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the highways network and CDM 2015 Proven experience in highways/road infrastructure design, construction, and delivery methods. Working knowledge of highways design software e.g. AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Micro Drainage etc and understanding of transport models and their requirements. Proven experience in working within budgets including the creation or agreement of a budget for scheme development. Understanding of the Value Management process and/or cost benefit analysis of schemes, for example understanding the benefits of a congestion or safety scheme. Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and work collaboratively with specialist teams across organisational boundaries.
