Analytical Scientist – Viral Vector Characterisation (GMP/ATMP) in Bedford

BioTalent is looking for an Analytical Scientist – Viral Vector Characterisation (GMP/ATMP) in Bedford

Job description

Scientist II – Analytical (Cell & Gene Therapy Innovation | Late-Stage Start-Up)

Bedford, UK | Permanent | On-site | Biotech | Scale-Up Environment

An ambitious, late-stage start-up is making waves in the cell and gene therapy space by developing advanced smart polymer technologies designed to improve viral vector purification and analytics. Backed by serious funding and led by experienced industry figures, they’re combining deep scientific expertise with agile, high-impact chemical manufacturing—and they’re gaining serious momentum. This is not your typical biotech job. It’s a chance to join a company that's shaping the future of advanced therapies, not just keeping pace with it.

The Opportunity

As a Scientist II – Analytical, you’ll take on a lab-based role working across polymer chemistry, immunoassays, and/or biochemistry. You’ll be instrumental in both hands-on R&D and broader analytical efforts. This is a collaborative and visible position, reporting directly to the Head of Analytical Chemistry, who in turn reports into the C-suite—so your work won’t be buried in middle management. You’ll have direct influence on real decision-making, making this an ideal fit for someone looking to make a tangible impact early in their career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments; analyse and interpret complex datasets
  • Develop, optimise and validate analytical methods
  • Write and maintain SOPs and lab documentation to ISO13485 and GLP standards
  • Contribute to design control and technical transfer processes
  • Lead or support daily lab activities across project teams
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and, on occasion, external customers
  • Perform COSHH assessments and support lab H&S compliance
  • Train and upskill colleagues as needed

Core Techniques You'll Use

  • Primary: HPLC
  • Additional: FIDA, FTIR, FPLC, DLS, BLI, UV Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, SPR

We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, or a related field
  • At least 2 years’ industry experience in a lab-based role
  • Hands-on experience with HPLC or comparable analytical techniques
  • Strong data interpretation and troubleshooting abilities
  • Familiarity with ISO13485 or GMP environments
  • A flexible, fast-paced, problem-solving mindset

Desirable:

  • 1–5 years postgrad experience in R&D or QC
  • Experience in polymers, microfluidics, or cell & gene therapy
  • Knowledge of assay development and validation

Core Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Confident in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Diligent in maintaining accurate, compliant records
