Are you confident in managing a high-volume product category while developing new product ranges and enhancing profitability?
MacGregor Black are partnering with a Leading DIY supplier on the search for a Buyer. This is a permanent role based in Essex.
In this key position, you’ll play an instrumental role in supporting the Head of buying, managing all aspects of the buying lifecycle—from sourcing to supplier negotiations and promotional support. This is an ideal opportunity for a commercially savvy buyer who enjoys balancing strategic planning with hands-on trading.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with the head of to implement the category’s buying roadmap.
- Oversee the full buying function for a high-performing product area, ensuring financial targets for sales, margin, and profit are met.
- Develop and maintain buying tools and supplier matrices to ensure optimal supplier performance and category structure.
- Identify and evaluate new product and brand opportunities through trend research, supplier outreach, and attendance at trade events in the UK and overseas.
- Plan and raise purchase orders in line with sales trends, marketing campaigns, and stock level requirements.
- Review ongoing product performance, taking necessary steps to address slow-moving or non-profitable lines.
- Ensure accurate product information is uploaded to internal systems and troubleshoot any related issues.
- Act as a key liaison between suppliers and internal teams, fostering collaborative relationships and prompt resolution of queries.
- Partner with marketing and supply chain teams to align product launches and promotions with wider business goals.
- Support improvements to buying processes and internal systems for better efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior colleagues and assist in onboarding new team members as needed.
- Maintain compliance with company procedures and uphold health and safety regulations.
What we’re looking for?
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, Grade 4/C or above.
- At least 2 years' experience in a buying or procurement role, ideally within the power tools or DIY sector.
- Background in managing supplier relationships, margin control, and budget planning.
- Retail or e-commerce experience is highly desirable.
- Confident user of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Comfortable working with internal systems and databases.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
