We are currently seeking freelance academic editors and/or indexers in the humanities to join our growing international team. This is a remote, non-contractual freelance position.
Position Summary
As a freelance academic editor and/or indexer at Lex Academic, you will work on a wide variety of humanities texts, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of academic clarity, coherence, and style. Your tasks may involve line editing, substantive editing, stylistic improvements, or the construction of indexes for monographs or edited volumes.
Key Responsibilities
For Academic Editing:
- Edit academic texts for language, grammar, tone, clarity, and structure
- Apply discipline-specific knowledge to refine complex arguments and terminologies
- Adhere to preferred style guides (e.g., Chicago, MHRA, APA) and specific journal or publisher requirements
- Provide thoughtful comments or queries to authors, where appropriate, to clarify intent or meaning
For Indexing:
- Create scholarly indexes for humanities monographs or edited volumes
- Demonstrate sensitivity to thematic, conceptual, and subject-driven categorization
Requirements
- Native-level fluency in English, including British, American, South African, Canadian, or other formal academic variants
- Demonstrable experience in academic editing and/or indexing
- Familiarity with academic publishing conventions and common style guides
- Strong attention to detail, editorial judgment, and the ability to maintain authorial voice
- Self-motivated and able to work independently to meet deadlines
- Access to a secure internet connection and basic editorial tools (e.g., Microsoft Word with Track Changes, indexing software where relevant)
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in a humanities discipline (e.g., philosophy, literature, history, classics, theology, cultural studies, art history)
- Published work in the humanities
- Experience working with academic publishers or journals
- Familiarity with editing for non-native English speakers
- Membership in a recognized editorial or indexing society (e.g., SfEP, CIEP, IPEd, IAI)
