Our client, a mission-led organisation operating in the public or not-for-profit sector, is seeking a senior legal professional to join their executive leadership team as General Counsel. This is a strategic and hands-on role, responsible for leading the organisation’s legal function while supporting robust governance, procurement, and risk oversight.

As General Counsel, you will:

  • Serve as the organisation’s most senior legal advisor, overseeing all legal matters and managing legal risk.
  • Act as Company Secretary or Board Secretary, supporting the Board and Committees to ensure strong governance and compliance with statutory obligations.
  • Lead legal input on contracts, procurement activity, and key organisational policies.
  • Provide high-quality, solution-focused advice to senior leaders, Board members, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement governance frameworks and risk management strategies.
  • Represent the organisation in key legal matters and external engagements when required.

What we’re looking for:

  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in Law, or part/full qualification with the Chartered Governance Institute (CGI), with significant experience in a senior legal or Company Secretary role.
  • Strong understanding of legal, governance, and risk practices in the public, charity, or regulated sectors.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to influence at Board and executive level.
  • Exceptional relationship-building and communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Proactive, detail-focused, and capable of balancing strategic priorities with operational delivery.
  • Experience within the public or not-for-profit sector is an advantage.
