Join a global leader in scientific instrumentation as a Principal Optical Scientist based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. We're seeking an experienced and hands-on optical expert to lead the design, development, and optimisation of advanced optical systems across our diverse product lines - from spectrophotometers and atomic spectroscopy instruments to imaging and laser-based systems.


You'll collaborate with international teams to drive innovation, guide complex R&D initiatives, and solve challenging optical problems. This role blends deep theoretical knowledge with practical implementation and offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of scientific tools.


Key responsibilities of the Principal Optical Scientist job:

  • Lead the design and development of advanced optical systems (e.g., spectrophotometers, imaging systems, laser-based instruments), using tools like Zemax for modelling and optimisation.
  • Define and validate system-level optical specifications, ensuring alignment with product requirements and performance targets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional R&D teams (mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering) across global sites to ensure seamless integration of optical systems.
  • Investigate and resolve optical-related manufacturing or field failures, conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.


Key skills / experience needed for the Principal Optical Scientist job:

  • PhD/Master’s/Bachelor’s in Optical Engineering, Physics or a related field
  • 5+ years leading optical design in instrumentation (Zemax expertise essential)
  • Strong analytical, experimental, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with spectroscopy, imaging, or laser-based systems would be beneficial
