Payroll and Benefits Lead – based at Llansantffraid, Powys (SY22 6AQ)

We are now looking for an experienced Payroll and Benefits Lead to join our People and Culture team. This is a key role responsible for delivering a first-class payroll and benefits function to the business, ensuring we continue to support and reward our colleagues effectively as we enhance our people strategy and drive operational excellence.


The Opportunity:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Acting as the technical expert for payroll and benefits, ensuring compliance with legislation and internal policies across all business units.
  • Taking ownership of complex and high-risk payroll items (e.g., terminations, back pay, pensions tax, benefits-in-kind) with accuracy and compliance.
  • Researching and implementing a benefits structure aligned with current and future business needs.
  • Supporting insurance, private medical, and pensions renewals and strategy.
  • Ensuring ongoing compliance with HMRC, Auto-Enrolment, IR35, Gender Pay, National Minimum Wage, and GDPR.
  • Providing expert payroll guidance, reviewing submissions, and upholding quality control across monthly cycles.
  • Leading payroll and benefits system configuration, troubleshooting, and enhancements to drive digital transformation and efficiency.
  • Developing and presenting dashboards and reports for leadership, clearly interpreting pay and benefits data.
  • Monitoring legislative changes and advising on system and process updates as needed.
  • Collaborating with Finance and People and Culture teams on reconciliations, audit responses, and reporting (e.g., PAYE, pensions).
  • Supporting internal and external audits related to payroll, benefits, and pensions compliance.
  • Contributing to cross-functional projects including acquisitions, integrations, and system upgrades.
  • Driving improvements through policy reviews and process enhancements in payroll and benefits.


The Person:

The successful candidate:

  • Professional qualification in payroll (e.g., CIPP or equivalent) or qualified by experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK payroll legislation, tax, and benefits administration.
  • Proven experience in delivering complex payrolls in a multi-entity organisation.
  • Strong systems experience (e.g., Pegasus, Sage, or similar HR/payroll platforms), including report generation and process improvement.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and analytical thinking.
  • Comfortable working autonomously and handling high volumes of data under pressure.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with ability to explain complex payroll issues to non-experts.


Experience supporting process automation or transformation projects is desirable.
