Job description
We are seeking an experienced Underwriter to join our team, specialising in Medical Malpractice and Professional Liability. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assessing, evaluating, and underwriting risks within the healthcare and professional services industries. This role requires strong analytical skills, market knowledge, preferably 2nd language skills and the ability to build strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal teams both locally and internationally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assess and underwrite new and renewal business for Medical Malpractice and Professional Liability insurance policies in accordance with company guidelines and risk appetite.
• Evaluate complex or non-standard risks that fall outside the general underwriting guidelines and make recommendations to CUO where applicable.
• Conduct in-depth risk analysis, including reviewing applications, financials, claims history, and loss control reports to determine insurability.
• Conduct day to day tasks of administrative nature related to the underwriting function.
• Develop and maintain relationships with MGA’s, brokers and agents to help drive business growth and retention.
• Assist the CUO in negotiating terms, conditions, and pricing of Binders to achieve profitable underwriting results.
• Stay up to date with industry trends, legal regulations, and market conditions impacting medical malpractice and professional liability risks.
• Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and risk management teams to enhance underwriting and profitability.
• Together with the CUO work with the Finance team on financial performance analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
• Support the CUO in the implementation of relevant policies, processes and controls designed to mitigate risks and comply with regulatory requirements. Identify and implement industry best practice.
• Contribute to underwriting guidelines, process improvements, and product development initiatives.
• Contribute to reporting of underwriting performance for the Underwriting Committee and the Board of Directors.
• Contribute to developing and designing and implementing new products while adhering to product governance guidelines.
• To maintain compliance with any applicable UK or International statutory or regulatory obligation as required by the role. This includes but not limited to obligations arising from:
The prudent management of the business.
Placing due regard on the interests of customers.
Observing rules on sanctions and financial crime.
Regulatory requirements and local licensing restrictions.
▪ To ensure risk management and maintaining a robust control environment is incorporated into the day-to-day responsibilities of the role. This includes but is not limited to:
Awareness and understanding of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework.
Ensuring the effective design and operation of controls within their function.
Identifying risks, risk events and issues arising in their business area and reporting these as per ERM Framework.
Participate in risk management activities/processes as required of the role.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE
• 5+ years of underwriting experience in Medical Malpractice and/or Professional Liability insurance.
• Experience from working with international counterparts.
• Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and policy structures.
• Understanding of the industry of professional services including healthcare professionals, hospitals, and other medical entities.
• Ability to analyse and interpret claims history, and industry trends.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build strong relationships.
• Language skills within Italian and/or Spanish and/or French desirable.
• Candidates must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom without sponsorship or restriction.
Hours: Monday to Friday 0900-1700, although flexibility with hours may be required on occasion. Mandatory minimum of 4 days a week in the physical office.
