We’re seeking a Technical Java Lead to join a high-impact programme within a public sector organisation. This contract role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of strategic thinking and hands-on leadership, with proven experience delivering digital services for UK government departments.
As the Java Lead, you’ll be responsible for shaping the technical strategy, building and leading a development team, and ensuring delivery of secure, scalable, and user-focused solutions. You'll be a key decision-maker in both technical and delivery discussions, supporting long-term transformation goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and drive the technical strategy in collaboration with senior leadership, aligning delivery with broader organisational and programme goals.
- Lead and manage development teams, ensuring high performance, continuous improvement, and adherence to engineering best practices.
- Oversee the end-to-end technical delivery of complex digital services, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, and user-centred.
- Provide technical leadership and architectural direction, particularly across Java-based systems, ensuring robust and maintainable codebases.
- Support resource planning, team structure, and performance management to build and maintain strong, effective teams.
- Act as a key point of contact for technical decision-making, working closely with delivery managers, product owners, and stakeholders.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, promoting knowledge sharing and engineering excellence.
Essential Experience:
- Proven experience in a senior technical leadership role, delivering large-scale, complex public sector programmes.
- Strong hands-on background in Java development, with the ability to guide and support engineering teams in best practices and architecture.
- Experience contributing to technical strategy and working closely with senior leadership teams to align technical direction with organisational goals.
- Successful track record of leading and scaling development teams, including mentoring, performance management, and recruitment.
- Experience working within UK government departments
- Holds SC Clearance
- Deep understanding of modern software development practices, agile delivery methods, and scalable architecture patterns.
