Make an Impact in the Game Behind the Game
The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) is the union for current and former professional footballers across the Premier League, Women's Super League, and English Football League. They are proud to represent the voice of players, protect their rights, and support them on and off the pitch.
The PFA are looking for a highly organised, professional, and discreet Secretary to the Board to play a key role in supporting both their Players Board and Operational Board. This is a unique opportunity to shape the rhythm of board governance across one of football's most high-profile and purpose-led organisations.
Whether you're from a legal, union, not-for-profit, executive assistant, or governance background, if you bring excellent minute-taking skills, board-level experience, and thrive in a role that requires neutrality, precision, and proactive planning-we'd love to hear from you.
About the Role:
This is a newly created position designed to bring consistency, structure, and excellence to how their Board meetings are scheduled, run, and recorded. You'll work closely with the CEO, Legal Director, and senior leaders to ensure the board operates smoothly, remains compliant, and stays aligned on critical actions. You'll be the calm, neutral force that keeps governance on track-without needing to influence decisions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and coordinating the PFA's annual calendar of Board and committee meetings
- Preparing and circulating agendas, briefing notes, and papers in advance
- Taking accurate, neutral, and timely minutes
- Tracking and following up on board actions
- Supporting the induction of new Board members and helping them understand internal dynamics
- Ensuring legal and regulatory compliance across governance processes
- Collaborating closely with the CEO, Chairs of both Boards, Legal team, and wider SLT
Meetings are typically held online to accommodate active players and geographically dispersed board members, though occasional in-person attendance in London or Manchester will be expected.
Essential Skills:
You don't need to be a football fan. What matters most is your ability to operate with professionalism, calm authority, and discretion in a complex, fast-paced environment.
The PFA are looking for someone with:
- Proven experience supporting Boards or senior leaders (e.g. EA, PA, Governance, Legal or Secretariat roles)
- Exceptional organisational and minute-taking skills
- An ability to stay neutral, focused, and tactful when handling high-profile, sensitive information
- A proactive mindset - you don't wait to be asked, you anticipate and act
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail and a commitment to confidentiality
- Confidence in working with stakeholders from different backgrounds and disciplines
Experience in trade unions, sport, regulatory bodies, or purpose-led organisations is welcome but not essential. The PFA are especially open to candidates who have worked in high-trust, high-confidentiality environments.
Why Join The PFA?
At the PFA, diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in everything they do. They encourage applications from all backgrounds, especially those underrepresented in football and governance, including women, people from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse communities, disabled people, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those returning to work after a career break.
What The PFA offer
- Flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance

- Opportunities for development and training
- A chance to contribute to one of the most influential voices in the game
