Steel Designer – Bedford

I am currently looking for a Steel Designer to join a well-established structural and architectural steelwork company based in Bedford. The business delivers a wide range of projects across London and the Home Counties, covering both structural steel and architectural metalwork.

The Role:

As a Steel Designer, you will be responsible for producing accurate and detailed designs for both structural and architectural steelwork projects. You will work closely with engineers, project managers, and fabricators to ensure all designs meet client specifications, comply with industry standards, and are fully buildable in the workshop and on-site.

Key Duties:

• Producing detailed GA drawings, fabrication drawings, and 3D models for structural and architectural steelwork
• Creating Bills of Materials and cutting lists for production
• Interpreting and working from architectural and engineering drawings and specifications
• Designing steel structures and metalwork in line with relevant codes and regulations
• Liaising with project managers, engineers, and the workshop to ensure practical and efficient designs
• Coordinating with site teams to provide design support during installation
• Ensuring all designs meet quality, safety, and compliance standards
• Making amendments to drawings and models based on client or project requirements
• Supporting multiple projects simultaneously, delivering to deadlines

The Candidate:

• Strong experience as a Steel Designer within the structural and/or architectural steelwork industry
• Proficiency in relevant design and detailing software (such as Tekla Structures, Advance Steel, or AutoCAD)
• Solid understanding of fabrication and installation processes
• Ability to interpret architectural and structural engineering drawings
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
• Strong communication skills for liaising with clients, engineers, and internal teams
