Consultant Gastroenterologist


Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

Employer: University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB)

Location: Across UHDB sites (Royal Derby Hospital, Queen’s Hospital Burton, and others as required)

Job Summary

Applicants are invited for the post of Consultant Physician with a special interest in Gastroenterology to join the Gastroenterology Team at UHDB.

We are looking to appoint two Consultants as part of the continued development of our specialist GI services. The successful applicants will support the delivery of high-quality, timely endoscopy care, outpatient clinics, and inpatient care.


Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide care for patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver disorders (benign and malignant).
  • Deliver services for conditions including IBS, IBD, enteral/parenteral nutrition, hepatology, and complex GI disorders.
  • Participate in endoscopy across UHDB’s JAG-accredited facilities:
  • 3-room Endoscopy Suite at Queen’s Hospital Burton (QHB).
  • 2-room Endoscopy Suite at Sir Robert Peel Hospital (SRP).
  • Contribute to the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology services across UHDB sites.
  • Contribute to the general medical on-call rota.
  • Opportunity to develop a specialist interest (e.g., IBD, nutrition, GI cancer, therapeutic endoscopy).

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential):

  • MBBS or equivalent, MRCP.
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise (or within 6 months of CCT at interview).
  • European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology & Hepatology (or equivalent).
  • ALS certification.

Qualifications (Desirable):

  • Higher medical/scientific degree.

Clinical Experience (Essential):

  • Ability to provide expert opinion across gastroenterological disorders.
  • Experience of General Medicine and independent clinical decision-making.

Clinical Experience (Desirable):

  • NHS experience (6–12 months).
  • Subspecialty interest in Hepatology or a complementary area.

Teaching (Essential):

  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Experience supervising trainees and teaching clinical skills.

Teaching (Desirable):

  • Specific teaching qualification and experience teaching endoscopy.

Management (Essential):

  • Commitment to CPD, clinical governance, and audit.
