Employment Lawyer in Birmingham

West Midlands Police is looking for an Employment Lawyer in Birmingham

Job description

Employment Lawyer

£54,879 – £58,455 | Permanent | Hybrid (2 days per week in office, Birmingham or Staffordshire)

We’re looking for a confident and motivated employment lawyer to join the Joint Legal Services team for West Midlands Police and Staffordshire Police. This is a growth post, reflecting the increasing demand for high-quality legal support across both forces.

You’ll take ownership of a busy and varied employment law caseload, working closely with senior officers and HR colleagues. Much of the work is contentious, and you’ll often be at the heart of complex tribunal cases. There’s scope to broaden your practice into areas like police misconduct, inquests, and regulatory work if you’re interested in developing new skills. Typical duties include:

  • Defending employment claims, often involving sensitive issues
  • Preparing cases for hearing, including working closely with counsel
  • Representing the forces in tribunal hearings (usually once or twice per month)
  • Providing advice on employee relations, policies, restructures, and other HR matters

About You

We’re open-minded about experience but we are looking for someone with energy and enthusiasm for this kind of work. We value attitude as much as experience, so if you’re enthusiastic about the work and keen to grow, we’d like to hear from you. Ideally you will:

  • Be a qualified solicitor, barrister or CILEX lawyer
  • Experience in employment litigation, eg discrimination or whistleblowing claims
  • Enjoy problem-solving and working collaboratively with colleagues

Why Join

  • Challenging and rewarding work: Be part of high-profile cases that have a real impact
  • Career growth: Opportunities to expand into new areas of law
  • Support: Benefit from support from senior lawyers and counsel
  • Work-life balance: Flexible working and a hybrid model

Generous benefits:

  • 28 days’ annual leave (plus bank holidays), rising with service
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Flexible working hours and the ability to buy additional leave
  • Access to Police Mutual financial and healthcare services
  • Discounts on gyms, travel, tech, and more
  • Family-friendly policies and a 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme

This is a chance to build your expertise, work on meaningful cases, and join a supportive team that values curiosity and ambition.
