Smart Buildings Designer – Healthcare


We are seeking a Smart Buildings Designer to support the design and integration of intelligent building systems within new healthcare facilities. This role will focus on shaping the digital hospital environment by embedding IoT, Building Management Systems (BMS), and Digital Twin capabilities into future hospital estates.


You will work closely with architects, engineers, and clinical operations teams to ensure hospital buildings are secure, efficient, patient-centric, and digitally enabled.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead the design of smart hospital environments, embedding IoT sensors, BMS, and AI-driven building capabilities.
  • Create digital twin models to simulate operational flow, patient journeys, and energy/resource optimisation.
  • Collaborate with healthcare and hospital operations teams to ensure building systems align with clinical and patient experience outcomes.
  • Specify interoperability standards between smart buildings infrastructure and wider hospital ICT (EPRs, asset tracking, robotics).
  • Support the development of technical standards for intelligent energy systems, security, and sustainability (aligned to NHS Net Zero).
  • Translate complex requirements into clear design documentation and architectural blueprints.


Essential Skills & Experience:


  • Strong background in smart building design and IoT-enabled environments.
  • Experience with BMS (Building Management Systems) and Digital Twin technology.
  • Previous involvement in hospital, healthcare, or complex infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of intelligent energy systems and sustainability principles.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and engage technical/non-technical stakeholders.
