Fire Safety Officer - Permanent

Location: London Luton Airport

Salary: £40,000pa - £45,000pa

Annual Leave: 25 days + Bank holiday

Reports to: Fire Safety Manager



As a Fire Safety Officer at London Luton Airport, you will play a key role in supporting the Fire Safety Manager to ensure the airport's full compliance with fire safety legislation and best practice. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring robust fire prevention measures, including inspections, audits, risk assessments, and emergency planning.



Working closely with operational teams, contractors, and third-party providers, you will help to drive a proactive fire safety culture across the airport. You will also contribute to the implementation and ongoing management of the Fire Safety Management System, in line with BS9997 and relevant statutory requirements.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice on fire safety legislation, including the Building Safety Act 2024, BS9997, BS9999, and BS9991
  • Support the Fire Safety Manager in reviewing and delivering fire risk assessments, ensuring timely resolution of identified actions.
  • Assist with the development, review, and maintenance of fire safety policies, procedures, and emergency response plans.
  • Carry out fire safety inspections, audits, and fire drills across all airport zones and facilities.
  • Plan and support terminal evacuation exercises in line with operational requirements.
  • Investigate fire-related incidents, alarm activations, and near misses, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Design and deliver engaging fire safety training for employees, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with all LLA departments to maintain a safe and compliant working environment.
  • Assist with the implementation and continuous improvement of the Fire Safety Management System (FSMS) in accordance with BS9997.
  • Support third-party audits and consultancy reviews.
  • Provide technical fire safety guidance for construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects, particularly high-risk activities such as hot works.
  • Review, issue, and monitor compliance with hot works permits, conducting audits and inspections as required.



Knowledge, Skills & Experience



Essential:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Fire Safety, NEBOSH Fire Cert (or equivalent) with experience in fire safety within large-scale, high-footfall environments (e.g., transport hubs, commercial properties, or critical infrastructure).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and experienced in developing and maintaining SharePoint sites and document libraries to support effective collaboration, document control, and structured information management.
  • Proven experience in carrying out risk assessments, audits, and inspections.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
  • Experience in delivering training and embedding a positive safety culture.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams (H&S, Estates, Projects, Commercial, Technical Services, Fire Safety).
  • Competent in using reporting systems to monitor compliance and track remedial actions.
  • Flexible, proactive, and solutions-focused approach to safety management.



Desirable:

  • Strong knowledge of emergency preparedness, resilience, and evacuation procedures.
  • In-depth understanding of fire safety legislation and British Standards (BS9997, BS9999, BS9991) alongside the Building Safety Act 2024.
