My London based Council, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Safer Recruitment Officer to join the HR and Safeguarding team and play a vital role in ensuring our Audit, DBS and compliance processes meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, and best practice.


THIS IS NOT A RECRUITMENT ROLE - The role sits within Recruitment but is responsible for all process and systems regarding DBS and Compliance via Atlantic Data.


As a Safer Recruitment Officer, you will be responsible for managing and advising on safe recruitment procedures across the council and its associated services (e.g., schools, care homes, and children's services). You will ensure that our policies and practices comply with statutory guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and Safer Recruitment Consortium standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the implementation of safe recruitment policies and procedures across council departments.
  • Ensure that all recruitment activities involving regulated roles are compliant with safer recruitment legislation and guidance.
  • Conduct pre-employment checks, including DBS, reference checks, identity verification, and right to work in the UK.
  • Provide training and guidance to hiring managers and school leaders on safe recruitment best practices.
  • Support with audits and investigations into recruitment-related safeguarding concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records and data related to safe recruitment activities.
  • Work collaboratively with HR, Safeguarding, Legal, and external partners such as Ofsted or the DBS service.


Essential Requirements:

  • In-depth knowledge of safer recruitment legislation and statutory guidance (e.g., KCSIE, Working Together to Safeguard Children).
  • Experience conducting or managing safe recruitment checks (DBS, references, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail and record-keeping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information confidentially and professionally.
