Rutherford is partnered with a leading UK law firm recognised for its cross-disciplinary strength across real estate, housing, and regeneration.


The firm is seeking a Planning Lawyer (1.5 to 3 PQE) to join its highly regarded team in London, working closely with partners and colleagues nationally to advise both public and private sector clients on major development and infrastructure projects.


Key responsibilities

  • Advise public and private sector clients on strategic planning policy, plan-making, and major development applications.
  • Draft and negotiate complex Section 106 and highway agreements linked to large regeneration and mixed-use schemes.
  • Support CPO and infrastructure projects, including public inquiries, enforcement actions, and judicial review challenges.
  • Represent clients in planning appeals and compensation matters, including Lands Chamber proceedings and S17 applications.
  • Collaborate closely with specialists in housing, construction, and governance to provide joined-up, commercially focused advice.
  • Build strong client relationships by delivering practical, solutions-driven guidance.


What you’ll bring

  • Experience advising on a range of planning and development matters, ideally with exposure to both public and private sector work.
  • Confidence managing planning agreements, appeals, and CPO-related issues.
  • Strong drafting and communication skills, with the ability to make complex legal concepts clear and actionable.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach and an interest in projects that balance commercial objectives with social and environmental value.
