Agent – Civil Engineering (Outside IR35)

Location: Plymouth

Contract Type: 12-Month Contract

IR35 Status: Outside IR35

Start Date: ASAP


Role Purpose

We are seeking an experienced Agent to join our delivery team on a major infrastructure project in the South West.


This role offers the opportunity to take a key leadership position within one of the UK’s most complex and challenging construction programmes, overseeing site-level delivery and ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership and management in a client-facing capacity, promoting a culture focused on safety, quality and collaboration.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractor activities, chairing regular progress and coordination meetings.
  • Report to senior leadership across multiple project and functional teams.
  • Liaise with site teams and cross-functional departments to ensure smooth delivery of works.
  • Identify and manage project risks and opportunities, maintaining an accurate risk register.
  • Review drawings and technical documentation, raising TQs, RFIs or NCRs where required.
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation, company procedures and site governance requirements.
  • Oversee Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), RAMS, permits to work, and site licence control measures.
  • Support training and competency development for supervisors, subcontractors, and site teams.
  • Prepare and monitor detailed schedules and programmes of work using tools such as Aphex or Primavera P6.
  • Lead H&S and progress meetings, ensuring effective communication and follow-up.
  • Manage handover documentation and ensure all project records are completed to the required standard.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum 5 years’ site experience in civil engineering, including at least 2 years in a Senior Engineer or Agent position.
  • Strong leadership, coordination and communication skills.
  • Proven track record managing multidisciplinary construction activities.
  • Proficient with MS Office and general IT systems.


Desirable:

  • Experience with BIM / Digital tools (Autodesk, Bentley).
  • Scheduling experience in Aphex, P6, or similar platforms.
  • Understanding of Behavioural Safety / Human Performance principles.


Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Valid CSCS card.


Desirable:

  • Chartered or working toward chartership (ICE / IStructE / CIOB).
  • Project Management training (APM, PRINCE2 or equivalent).
  • SMSTS / IOSH certification.
  • Additional site competencies such as Temporary Works Coordinator, Lifting Appointed Person, or Confined Spaces (Medium).
