Operation Onyx – Investigator Role Overview


Start Date: Subject to vetting

Duration: 6 months (until June 2026)

Hourly Rate: £20.98 PAYE per hour / £27.18 Umbrella per hour (paid weekly via umbrella company)


Purpose of the Role

Support Operation Onyx, a dedicated review and reinvestigation programme examining historic and recent Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) cases involving allegations of domestic abuse (DA) and sexual misconduct (SM) by police officers or staff.

The role contributes to ensuring accountability, integrity, and the highest standards of policing conduct — a key part of restoring public confidence.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review and assess previous and ongoing DPS investigations relating to DA and SM allegations.
  • Produce Briefing Notes and analytical reports for NPCC Officers and senior stakeholders.
  • Reinvestigate selected cases as directed by the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO).
  • Conduct file reviews, evidence collation, and case summaries to support decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with partner agencies and internal departments, maintaining discretion and professionalism.


Essential Criteria

  • Management Vetting (MV) and Security Clearance (SC) required.
  • Proven investigative experience (e.g., professional standards, safeguarding, or public protection).
  • Recent experience within a public protection environment (e.g., DA, child protection, sexual offences).
  • Flexible, proactive approach; able to manage workload and priorities effectively.
  • Excellent report writing, summarising complex material clearly.
  • Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Solid understanding of:
  • Police Conduct Regulations
  • Police Reform Act
  • Police (Complaints and Misconduct) Regulations
  • Police (Performance) Regulations


Desirable Experience

  • Handling complaints and misconduct investigations.
  • Safeguarding experience (listed as essential within desirable criteria).
  • Background in intelligence or SOIT (Sexual Offences Investigative Techniques) training.
  • Sapphire (sexual offences) training or casework experience.
  • Experience with complex or sensitive investigations, particularly involving internal misconduct or professional standards.


Working Arrangements

  • Base Location: Newlands Park (primary)
  • Additional sites:
  • Colbot Square (Vauxhall)
  • Southwark (Borough High Street)
  • Hybrid working: 3 days office / 2 days remote
  • Flexible options: Part-time and condensed hours considered
  • Role subject to DPS Health Check
  • Ideal Candidate Profile
  • This role would particularly suit:
  • Current or former Police Staff Investigators (PSIs), Detectives, or Professional Standards investigators.
  • Individuals with public protection or safeguarding backgrounds (e.g., DA units, child protection, or sexual offences).
  • Investigators with experience in misconduct and complaint handling, especially within a regulatory or public sector context.
  • Candidates with a strong understanding of conduct regulations and internal disciplinary procedures.
