Rutherford is partnered with a leading UK law firm recognised for its full-service strength across construction, infrastructure, and development projects. The firm is seeking an experienced Contentious Construction Lawyer (4-5PQE) to join its London team, advising on high-value and technically complex construction and engineering disputes.


You’ll work with a highly regarded group acting for developers, contractors, funders, and public bodies on major UK and international projects, handling disputes across adjudication, arbitration, mediation, and litigation. The team offers end-to-end advice across the construction lifecycle, with close integration between its contentious and non-contentious lawyers.


Key responsibilities

  • Advise on and manage construction and engineering disputes, including adjudication, arbitration, mediation, and TCC litigation.
  • Act on disputes arising under JCT, NEC, FIDIC, EPC, and bespoke contracts, covering delay, disruption, defects, payment, and termination claims.
  • Support clients with live project advice, risk management, and dispute avoidance strategies.
  • Work with developers, investors, and contractors on complex infrastructure, housing, and regeneration schemes.
  • Collaborate closely with non-contentious colleagues to deliver joined-up, commercial solutions across procurement, delivery, and asset management.
  • Build trusted, long-term relationships with clients by providing clear, strategic, and commercially sound advice.


What you’ll bring

  • Strong experience in contentious construction law, ideally gained within a leading construction, projects, or infrastructure team.
  • Confidence handling adjudications, arbitrations, mediations, or court proceedings.
  • Deep understanding of standard form and bespoke contracts, and the commercial realities of the construction industry.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills, with a solutions-driven mindset.
  • A collaborative, proactive approach and a genuine interest in the built environment and infrastructure sector.
