Job description
Job Title: Senior Planner (M&E) – Defence Sector
Location: Reading (Site-Based, 5 Days per Week)
Clearance Required: Active SC (or above) – essential
About the Role
We’re seeking two experienced Senior Planners (Mechanical & Electrical) to join a high-security defence infrastructure programme. This is a site-based construction delivery role, not a PMO position.
Working under the supervision of the Head of Planning, you will support Construction and Work Package Leads in developing and maintaining a detailed and accurate delivery programme. You’ll ensure that all planning and scheduling activities are effectively managed within the corporate Primavera P6 system, producing a true and reliable representation of project progress and forecast completion.
The position requires close collaboration with programme planners, delivery teams, and supply chain partners to maintain schedule integrity, resolve constraints, and ensure alignment across all workstreams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all M&E planning and schedule management activities in Primavera P6 within an enterprise, multi-user environment.
- Apply technical and construction knowledge to develop, integrate, and manage M&E work packages within the overall delivery programme.
- Interface directly with supply chain partners, conducting regular schedule reviews and challenging contractor submissions where required.
- Facilitate interactive planning reviews with stakeholders to optimise sequencing and minimise schedule risks.
- Ensure compliance with contractual requirements, particularly the NEC Programme for Acceptance process.
- Support the implementation and analysis of Earned Value Management (EVM) for schedule and performance tracking.
- Build and manage Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and develop robust schedules from limited inputs.
- Perform Critical Path and Float Analysis, identify key activities, and assess schedule impacts.
- Develop and evaluate what-if scenarios to test potential mitigation strategies or sequencing changes.
- Collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners to improve delivery logic and maintain programme integrity.
- Provide planning advice, progress interrogation, and accurate reporting to support senior management decisions.
Key Requirements
- Active SC (or above) Security Clearance – essential.
- Significant site-based experience delivering complex, multi-disciplinary construction projects to programme.
- Advanced user of Primavera P6 in an enterprise, multi-user environment.
- In-depth understanding of NEC contracts, particularly the Programme for Acceptance mechanism.
- Proven experience implementing and managing Earned Value Analysis (EVA).
- Ability to integrate M&E infrastructure with complex plant and building systems.
- Skilled in schedule interrogation, logic sequencing, and contractor programme challenge.
- Experience developing and maintaining WBS, schedules, and progress reports from limited information.
- Strong analytical capability with experience in Critical Path Analysis, float management, and forecasting.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a partnering environment.
Additional Information
- This is a site-based position – candidates must be willing to attend site five days per week.
- Due to the sensitive nature of the work, only candidates with current, active SC (or higher) clearance can be considered.
- This role offers the opportunity to work within a high-performing delivery team on one of the UK’s most technically demanding defence infrastructure programmes.
