AI Product Owner

Reports to: Head of AI and Innovation

The Role: The M&G Life business has an ambitious strategy for growth that encompasses the creation of a broader range of investment solutions, enhances customer access to our products, and expands our distribution capability while delivering value through advice.

The ability to achieve our strategic goals and build a future-ready business relies on a coherent, integrated digital, data & AI strategy bolstered by robust governance processes.

The AI Product Owner will be responsible leading the delivery of a portfolio of AI and Innovation activities, helping to define ways of working and supporting the AI and Innovation strategy. This strategy will support the overall digital, data & AI objectives, cover all aspects of the Life business, and drive business transformation through innovation.  In addition, the AI Product Owner acts as an AI Product Owner, accountable for defining product vision, shaping roadmaps, prioritising backlogs, and ensuring adoption and measurable business outcomes across value streams.

Key areas of focus include:

  • AI and Innovation Delivery Leadership: Develop and deliver opportunities against an AI strategy that provides critical insights, drives efficiency, and create value across the business. Ensure effective delivery through driving a culture of continuous improvement and a strong understanding of how the Life business operates. Developing strong relationships across with Group Technology and business stakeholders to ensure value achieved and seamless delivery. Additionally, own the AI product lifecycle from PoC through MVP to scaled production, embedding success metrics such as adoption, engagement, and cost-to-serve.
  • Innovation: Drive the innovation by identifying new opportunities to showcase the benefits of AI and Data Science led approaches. Validate concepts through rapid prototyping and scale successful solutions. Champion user-centric design and feedback loops to inform product evolution and foster innovation within the organisation.

All of the above will require the role holder to undertake the following:

  • Collaboration: Work closely with various departments, including Marketing, IT, Sales, Distribution, Propositions, and Customer Service, to ensure AI and innovation strategies align with business goals. Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders and communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Project Delivery: Manage and contribute development to a portfolio of activities and ensure effective end-to-end delivery, working with stakeholders and technology partners. Maintain and communicate an AI product roadmap aligned to business priorities and regulatory requirements.
  • Leadership: Lead and mentor a delivery team of AI and innovation professionals both internally and with third party suppliers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Key Work Level Accountabilities:

Manager/Expert

  • To engage with stakeholder to uncover opportunities and lead multiple projects (PoC and end-to-end delivery), coordinating activities across the team and interested parties.
  • Support the Principal AI Lead in implementing best practice and ensure high standard of work delivered, and implemented continuous improvement initiatives. To support in the delivery roadmap across the AI and Innovation team, ensuring prioritisation and measurable outcomes.
  • To manage and contribute to a multi-discipline delivery team consisting of Business Analysts, AI Engineers, Developers and Testers, through both direct and matrix management.
  • To provide expertise across all Life AI and innovation topics. Including
  • Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Agentic AI, Autonomous agents for workflow automation
  • More traditional AI concepts in Data Science and Machine Learning
  • AI-powered decision intelligence systems
  • AI ethics and responsible AI implementation
  • Deliver AI solutions across the full life cycle from PoCs and MVPs into production.
  • Ensure robust business cases for proposed projects to ensure value realisation.
  • Ensure projects are aligned with the overall digital, data & AI strategy and business objectives.
  • Foster strong working relationships with operational business units, marketing, sales, distribution, and the group technology teams.

  • Proven track record in product management or product ownership roles.
  • Strong background in Data Science, Machine Learning and data platforms
  • Experience deploying various AI technologies and their application in business contexts.
  • Experienced leading people in AI initiatives.
  • Knowledge of product design and evolution into service design.
  • Experience in Life or wider Financial Services.
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies, service design & digital transformation.
  • Experience working in a highly controlled and regulated environment.
