Job description
Sir Robert McAlpine is delivering a major multi-year construction programme in Port Talbot, South Wales, involving heavy construction and civil engineering works across a major industrial site. Beginning with critical enabling works, this programme forms a central part of a £1bn+ megaproject to build the world's largest electric arc furnace, driving a greener, decarbonized future and setting new standards in engineering excellence.
We're seeking an experienced Head of Health, Safety and Compliance to lead the creation and implementation of a world-class Health, Safety and Compliance strategy across our major capital programmes. This pivotal role will shape safety vision, ensure compliance with CDM, COMAH and wider legislation, and drive continuous improvement through robust systems, standards and cultural leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Health, Safety and Compliance strategy for Strategic Capex projects
- Lead major hazard management and ensure full compliance with CDM, COMAH and other relevant legislation.
- Embed best-practice risk management throughout all project phases, benchmarking externally.
- Provide expert Health, Safety and Compliance guidance to project teams and act as the company's lead specialist on CDM.
- Monitor compliance with Health, Safety and Compliance policies and standards, ensuring effective H&S management systems.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies (HSE, Competent Authority, EA).
- Lead structured communication forums to ensure clear, consistent Health, Safety and Compliance updates.
- Produce performance reports, oversee investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Extensive experience leading Health, Safety and Compliance in large, complex Civil, Industrial or Construction projects.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and major industrial environments.
- Expert knowledge of Health, Safety and Compliance legislation, particularly CDM.
- Degree-level education and professional H&S qualifications; chartered membership essential.
- Proven ability to lead cultural change and influence at all levels.
- Senior leadership experience within major plant or large asset-based settings.
