Coil & Coating Operator – Sonoco Metal Packaging | Newcastle, UK

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne – Onsite NE27 0QF

Hours: 37.5 hours/week, 3 shifts (Early 6am–2pm, Late 2pm–10pm, Night 10pm–6am; Early/Late shifts mainly, Night as cover)

About the Role

Sonoco is a global leader in metal packaging, producing high-quality printed sheets of tinplate, food cans, aerosol cans, and promotional packaging for hundreds of well-known consumer brands.

We’re looking for motivated Coil & Coating Operators/ Line Operator to join our Newcastle plant. This is an exciting hands-on role where you will:

• Set up, adjust, and run coil and coating lines
• Carry out specification and tool changeovers efficiently
• Ensure line safety, quality, and housekeeping standards are met
• Monitor and report on line efficiency, downtime, and quality issues
• Identify and implement process improvements
• Support and train apprentices or team members
• Perform daily machine maintenance (oiling, greasing, cleaning)

This is a great opportunity for candidates with manufacturing, production line, or engineering backgrounds who are ready to expand their skills in metal coil and coating operations. Training will be provided for candidates with strong line-running experience.

What We’re Looking For

• Experience in production line operation, manufacturing engineering, or print/assembly processes
• Good mechanical aptitude and basic electrical knowledge
• Ability to take precision measurements
• Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills
• Team-oriented with excellent communication and safety awareness
• Experience in quality control, process improvement, and production reporting

Desirable: Engineering qualification, prior print processing or line-running experience, and knowledge of 5S/continuous improvement methodologies.
