About Mill Media

Mill Media, which since being started in June 2020, has become a new force in British journalism, publishing high quality local journalism in six UK cities. Based in Manchester, the company has been described as “one of the most interesting and impressive media startups of the last decade,” by the FT’s John Burn-Murdoch, and as “very, very impressive” by the Wall Street Journal’s editor Emma Tucker.

Our financial backers include Sir Mark Thompson, the chief executive of CNN and former boss of the New York Times and BBC, and Dame Diane Coyle, the University of Cambridge economist. The Observer wrote that we are “shaking up local news.”

Our titles are regularly recognised for groundbreaking stories. Three of our investigations have been shortlisted at the British Journalism Awards, and two were listed by Private Eye for the Paul Foot Award. Our investigation into the University of Greater Manchester has led to a major police investigation and the suspension of senior officials.

Our team is spread across the country, but in our Manchester HQ we have three reporters, two editors and two commercial staff. We work four days a week in the office and have an extremely supportive and collaborative office culture.

About this role

We’re hiring a marketing and events assistant to join the team in early 2026. It’s an incredibly varied role, reporting to our Operations Manager, Maisy, that will encompass lots of the things we do. It will require someone who is both very creative but also very organised and efficient. Here are the broad areas we expect will be central to the role:

  1. Social media: Making great social posts for various platforms, including shooting and editing videos with the editorial team and posting them in our voice, while also keeping an eye on analytics and the growth they drive for us.
  2. Events organising: Helping to organise member and public events across various Mill Media cities, including developing themes, finding venues, booking guests, organising equipment, and managing things on the day/evening.
  3. Community engagement: Speaking to our paying members and readers when they get in touch about stories, subscriptions issues and other queries, and really getting to know some of our most loyal subscribers.
  4. Commercial and admin: Assisting with operational and finance tasks, setting up partnerships with local businesses to offer discounts for our members, uploading receipts for VAT returns, processing expense claims etc.

The role will require about an hour of weekend work each week, posting our stories on social media on Saturday mornings. It will also include occasional travel and evening work for reader events in our various cities, though of course we will cover your travel expenses and give you back time in lieu.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who wants to work in a fast-paced startup, who can handle having lots of plates spinning and who loves working with a team in an office environment. This is a role that requires someone who is super committed, can communicate what we do really well, doesn’t complain about doing minor admin tasks alongside creative ones like coming up with ideas for events and videos, and really wants Mill Media to grow and succeed.

Here are the key attributes required:

  • Eager to take responsibility and be able to manage multiple requests and tasks during a day
  • A talented social media operator who knows how to make posts perform well, and either has or can quickly pick up video editing skills
  • Communicative, keeping managers in the loop about your work and quick to alert us to any issues. Able to write in a way that communicates a message effectively
  • A keen learner, someone who really listens and wants to get better at a wide range of things and is flexible when priorities change

Experience with managing events and social media accounts will be helpful but is not required as long as you’re willing to learn fast. This role is not one that will evolve into a journalism job.

How to apply: Send over a CV and covering e-mail (explaining why you think you would be a good fit for the role, along with three ideas for social videos or posts that you think would spread the word about one of our titles or a specific story we’ve done) to hiring@millmediaco.uk by Sunday 4 January 2026.
