The Role:
The Transport Planner is responsible for the efficient daily planning, scheduling, and coordination of the Ossett transport operation, including company fleet and spot-hire vehicles. The role ensures service levels are met, customer requirements are fulfilled, and all transport activities remain compliant, cost-effective, and operationally efficient.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Transport Planning & Scheduling
- Create daily transport plans covering fleet vehicles and spot-hire requirements.
- Optimise routes to maximise vehicle utilisation, minimise mileage, and control transport costs.
- Schedule collections, deliveries, & backhauls in line with customer requirements and operational constraints.
Operational Execution
- Liaise with warehouse, production, and customer service teams to align plans with product availability.
- Brief and debrief drivers, ensuring they understand routes, special instructions, and customer expectations.
- React to issues on the day (e.g., delays, vehicle breakdowns, customer changes) and replan effectively.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all transport operations meet UK legislation, including Working Time Directive, driver hours, vehicle regulations, and site safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate records for audits and compliance checks.
Customer Service
- Provide clear and proactive communication to internal teams and customers regarding delivery status, delays, and operational issues.
- Work collaboratively to resolve queries and improve service performance.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Track KPI performance for OTIF, cost control, utilisation, and service levels.
- Identify opportunities to improve planning efficiency and reduce transport spend.
- Contribute to transport projects and support the development of planning processes and systems.
Person Specification:
- Experience in UK & EU transport planning
- Strong knowledge of UK geography and transport legislation
- Ability to plan routes for multi-drop, full load and time-specific deliveries
- Confident working with Microsoft Excel
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- A background in FMCG, manufacturing, food production or similar time-sensitive operations is desirable
Additional Information:
Based at the Ossett site, you’ll be part of the Supply Chain Team. Working hours are Monday-Friday, 08.30-17.00, with 1 hour lunch, however due to the nature of the business a degree of flexibility is required.
