Job description
Forensic Engineer – Electrical and Fire Failure Investigation
Location: UK - REMOTE / HYBRID

Turn your passion for engineering and science into real-world impact.
Are you an electrical engineer who enjoys taking things apart, understanding how things work and solving puzzles with real-world consequences?
This role turns your engineering brain into an investigative toolkit. You will work on live incidents involving electrical faults, fires, mechanical failures and unexpected events. Many fires have an underlying electrical cause, and you will learn how to trace that origin with scientific precision. Every case is different, and every answer must be backed by evidence.
The Role
You will join a specialist forensic investigation team, where you will
- Visit sites to examine electrical systems equipment, fire scenes and installations
- Collect and document evidence from damaged structures, components and materials
- Strip down electrical items and burnt equipment to identify modes of failure
- Work with labs to run tests, experiments and reconstructions
- Analyse the chain of events behind electrical and fire-related failures
- Turn complex findings into clear written reports clients can rely on
- Communicate your conclusions confidently to both technical and non-technical people
This is a hands-on role that blends electrical engineering with forensic fire investigation. No two days are the same.
Who This Suits
Ideal for someone who is
- Academically strong with a degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
- From a Russell Group or equivalent background
- Comfortable with real electrics not just theory
- Interested in how electrical faults can lead to fires and wider system failures
- Clear and fluent in spoken and written English
- Curious, analytical and motivated by uncovering the truth from physical evidence
- Looking for a career that blends site investigation, scientific analysis and technical communication
What You Bring
- A strong honours degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline
- Practical understanding of domestic or industrial electrics
- Ability to think clearly from first principles
- Desire to investigate not just design
- Strong communication skills
- Flexibility for site visits and hands-on dismantling work, including fire-affected equipment
Why This Career Stands Out
- Real investigations not repetitive design
- Exposure to high-profile electrical and fire incidents
- Work that is meaningful, varied and intellectually challenging
- Mentoring from experienced forensic investigators
- A clear development path to become an expert in electrical and fire failure analysis
If you enjoy engineering detective work and want a role where your curiosity and logic make a real impact, I would love to hear from you.
