About the Role
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Surgical Care Practitioner (Band 8a) to join a dynamic and progressive General Surgery service.
You will practise with a high level of autonomy and accountability, managing complex surgical patients across the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative pathway. While appointed within a core specialty (Colorectal, HPB, or UGI), you will be supported to work across specialties for less complex procedures as services develop.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Clinical Practice
- Deliver autonomous, consultant-level clinical care to surgical patients across outpatient, inpatient, and theatre settings.
- Coordinate care throughout the surgical pathway, working closely with multidisciplinary teams.
- Undertake advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management, including initiating treatment plans and referrals.
- Act as an independent prescriber, managing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments within scope of practice.
- Support Consultant Surgeons in theatre, including first assisting, delegated consent, patient positioning, suturing, and robotic bedside assistance where trained.
- Independently run specialist outpatient clinics, including cancer and rapid-access pathways, with appropriate support.
Essential
- Current UK professional registration (NMC / HCPC)
- MSc in Surgical Care Practice (or equivalent advanced practice qualification)
- Independent Prescriber (annotated on professional register)
- Significant experience as a Surgical Care Practitioner or Advanced Practitioner
- Strong clinical decision-making, leadership, and communication skills
- Evidence of ongoing CPD, audit, and service development
Desirable
- Teaching and assessing qualification
- Robotic surgery experience
- Leadership or management qualification
- Research experience, publications, or presentations
