Role Overview
The Infrastructure Technician will contribute to the delivery of civil engineering and infrastructure projects across residential, commercial, industrial, and public‑sector developments. This role focuses on producing accurate design outputs, supporting engineers with project delivery, and ensuring all work aligns with technical standards and organisational quality expectations. Working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams, the technician will help deliver practical, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design and Drafting
- Produce high‑quality 2D and 3D drawings using AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D for highways, drainage, and general civil engineering works.
- Prepare engineering design models, layouts, sections, and detailed construction drawings.
- Support digital design development, including BIM‑compliant models where required.
- Update drawings and models to reflect design changes, engineer instructions, and client or stakeholder feedback.
Standards, Compliance and Approvals
- Prepare design outputs and supporting information in accordance with relevant UK design standards and regulations.
- Assist with the preparation and coordination of technical submissions for planning, statutory approvals, and other regulatory processes.
- Ensure all design work complies with internal quality procedures, industry best practices, and documentation standards.
Project Delivery
- Work collaboratively with engineers to deliver design packages on time and within agreed budgets.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical schedules, calculations, quantities, and project documentation.
- Support site‑based activities including inspections, surveys, and information gathering to inform design development.
- Maintain organised project files and support efficient workflow processes across the team.
Collaboration
- Work closely with engineers, senior technicians, project managers, and colleagues across multiple offices.
- Liaise with external stakeholders such as architects, planners, surveyors, utility providers, and contractors to ensure coordinated design outputs.
- Participate in internal meetings and cross‑disciplinary reviews to ensure alignment across project disciplines.
Quality
- Produce accurate, clear, and consistent drawings that meet organisation‑wide quality expectations.
- Conduct self‑checks and participate in peer reviews of drawings, models, and design packages.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting ideas to enhance design quality, efficiency, and workflows.
Essential Skills and Experience
- A relevant HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in civil engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience working in a civil or infrastructure engineering technician role.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, with working knowledge of Civil 3D or similar design/modelling tools.
- Understanding of UK highways, drainage design principles, and associated technical standards.
- Ability to produce accurate, well‑structured drawings and design models.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high‑quality work.
- Effective communication, teamwork, and organisational skills, with the ability to manage workload across multiple projects.
Desirable Skills
- Experience producing 3D surface models, alignments, earthworks, and drainage networks.
- Familiarity with MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, or related drainage design software.
- Experience preparing drawings for planning, tender, or construction submission packages.
- Understanding of utilities coordination and service layouts.
