A Hole In My Soul That Will Never Repair
1st DRAFT 1st DRAFT 1st DRAFT
Treatment
Concept : A disaster happens when unwanted pregnancies turn into male children and unwilling mothers misrepresent to their male children who their real parents are. A fundamental breach of Trust by the parent to the undeserving pre-school child.
This was ‘the lot’ of Thomas Harrison. A man whose life and death (suicide) after slaughtering 14 children and 3 adults at Dunblane Primary School on 13th March 1996. It made all main UK TV News Channels and all UK main newspaper’s front pages.
The government made significant overdue changes to firearms legislation and Police approval procedures in the light of what occurred – but the “why ?” remains a mystery despite a report chaired by the same Scottish Judge [Lord Cullen] as investigated and elucidated the causes of the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster on 6th July 1988.
This dramatisation will throw new light on the possible cause of what has become widely known as “The Dunblane Massacre - 1996”
The deep psychological roots of the disaster in the mind of the perpetrator, Thomas Harrison, are examined in what might be termed (in both life assurance fact finds and Police firearms background checks) as a “whole of life” approach.
The life of a human being from conception until death is examined and dramatised – as are the ‘core relationships and early dependencies’ of the individual are not only explored, but considered critical in the life of the individual in middle and later life; their propensity to delinquency and most critically in the likelyhood of self-harm or the propensity to cause harm to others
The idea that Thomas Harrison was not so much a psychopath as a ‘crazy mixed up kid’ is not a widely held viewpoint at this time. The idea that his mother’s misrepresentation that his grandparents were in fact his parents and that his mother was actually his elder sister is a step towards unravelling the mystery of “Why ?”
This film will break new ground in suggesting a background to the fact that he might actually be “The Eighteenth Child”, also shot by Thomas Harrison and that some deeper psychiatric disturbance is at work underlays the apparently random nature of the massacre of reception class infants, many of them under 5 years of age ?
Was this the age at which Mrs Harrison began the pretence that “I’m not your Mummy; our mother is Mrs Harrison and our Daddy is Mr Harrison and I am just your elder sister...
And looking to other Firearms massacres, Hungerford was believed by a Broadmoor psychiatrist to have been orchestrated by a perpetrator who was authorised to hold military calibre rifles and police calibre handguns but may have fallen ill with a psychotic episode in which he murdered his own mother without any apparent animosity on her part.
Have Thames Valley Police learned now, in 2026, how unwise it was to send All firearms officers on a training course on the same day, without any contingency plans to even warn, in advance, or make ready to deploy - officers from neighbouring police districts who are firearms trained (though perhaps unfamiliar with the actual streets of an adjacent town or city) ?
Is it not the time to ask the strategic law enforcement questions BEFORE a crisis like Hungerford or Dunblane occurs for a second time, though God forbid it will ever occur again.
I can remember my own father (who as a free mason who rubbed shoulders - as it were - with senior police officers in the days before it was recognised that membership by Police officers of such charitable social groups could be, at times, counter productive and could undermine the Police services’ own hierarchies and management.
Surely it is time that society as a whole reviewed the firearms legislation and the unrecognised complex issues surrounding licensing and the importance of child care in protecting wider society from harms related to unpredictable illness like psychosis that have claimed a series of lives – though less ‘headline’ grabbing ?
If our film alerts serious-minded members of society to ask questions, we shall be delighted to have opened their eyes to accidents or tragedies-in-the making - as it were - from apparently quite innocent child care practices that arise from the convenience of adults who are often quite unthinkingly betraying the vital trust a pre-school child needs as a moral foundation for their proper development maturation into socially responsible teenagers and ultimately adults.
I’ll mention the name of John Bowlby’s book “Child Care and the Growth of Love” and I am put in mind of John Huston’s lesser known film “Let There Be Light” which deals with psychiatric damage sustained by U.S. WW2 ordinary soldiers and the methodology used to help them return from battlefields to cornfields, as it were.
A fascinating historic journey, narrated by John Huston’s own father - actor - Walter Houston.
Would that our modest film might stand alongside John Huston’s work in content and dramatic quality ? If we don’t it’s certainly not for want of trying.
New perspectives on perennial problems that stubbornly repeat themselves and which go to the heart of who we all are - is our goal as film-makers. New ideas on how to understand old problems is our bread and butter, as you might say ? You decide (at the end of the film) whether we’ve made you think and reconsider your position upon some of the hitherto unfathomable elements of human behaviour.
We are always learning and - as a fellow DHL LGV contract driver said to me “Every day’s a school day !” We were in our mid-40’s, age-wise at that time .
