Mechanical Design Engineer – Principal / Associate Director (2iC)

Building Services Consultancy | Peterborough (Hybrid Working)

Salary up to ~£75,000

An established building services consultancy with a strong international footprint across the UK, US, and Middle East is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer at Principal or Associate Director level to step into a 2iC (Second-in-Command) position.

The role is based in Peterborough, with a hybrid working arrangement in place. You’ll work closely with senior leadership, take ownership of technical delivery, and play a visible role in shaping the future direction of the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as 2iC to the Mechanical Director, supporting leadership and delivery
• Lead and review mechanical building services designs across complex projects
• Provide technical oversight, quality assurance, and design sign-off
• Engage directly with blue-chip clients and senior stakeholders
• Mentor and develop engineers within the mechanical team
• Support workload planning, resourcing, and delivery strategy
• Attend UK and international client meetings as required

Project & Client Exposure

• Commercial and complex building services projects
• Long-standing relationships with global blue-chip organisations
• Projects delivered across the UK, United States, and Middle East
• Genuine opportunity for international travel

Candidate Profile

• Background in mechanical building services design
• Experience within a building services consultancy environment
• Operating at Principal Engineer or Associate Director level
• (or a Senior Principal ready to step up)
• Comfortable in a senior, client-facing leadership role
• Commercially aware and delivery-focused
• Aspirational and motivated to act as a No.2 within the business
