Job Title: Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Assistant

Location: Cambridge

Work Type: Contract

Part-time: 2 days per week / 16 hours per week

WorkType : Onsite


Job Description:

  • The EHS Assistant will support the delivery of Environment, Health & Safety programmes across UK Research & Development (R&D) sites.
  • The role is critical in ensuring compliance with UK EHS regulations, internal standards, and best practices, while supporting continuous improvement in EHS performance.
  • The position reports directly to the GWE R&D EHS Lead and is site-based in Cambridge.

Key Responsibilities:

Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)

  • Ensure SSOW compliance across R&D sites.
  • Review Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Issue permits to work and communicate requirements to relevant personnel.
  • Conduct performance checks on contractor activities to ensure work is executed in line with approved RAMS.
  • Stop work where unsafe practices or methods are observed.

Statutory Inspections

  • Coordinate and manage statutory inspection schedules.
  • Track follow-up actions and ensure timely closure.

Audits & Inspections

  • Support audit preparation activities.
  • Ensure corrective actions are completed within agreed timelines.
  • Carry out routine workplace inspections.

Declaration of Conformity

  • Assist with the management and maintenance of Declaration of Conformity documentation.
  • Ensure equipment complies with relevant regulatory and safety standards.

Risk Assessment

  • Support completion and review of risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to implement and maintain effective safety controls.

Change Control

  • Participate in change control processes to assess EHS risks linked to new equipment, materials, or processes.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define and implement appropriate risk mitigation measures.

Incident Investigation

  • Conduct initial reviews and investigations of EHS incidents, near misses, and good saves.
  • Perform root cause analysis and maintain investigation documentation.
  • Support the development and tracking of corrective and preventive action plans.

Communication & Engagement

  • Support responses to the UK R&D EHS group mailbox.
  • Compile EHS communications and promotional content for internal programmes.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Support the creation and review of EHS procedures.
  • Contribute to data analysis, trend identification, and preparation of EHS performance reports.

Continuous Improvement

  • Promote a strong EHS culture focused on continuous improvement, best practice, and operational excellence.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of UK EHS regulations and best practices.
  • Practical understanding of Risk Assessment, Incident Investigation, Auditing, and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Excellent organisational and documentation skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, and report/procedure preparation.

Qualifications & Experience

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent).
  • Practical experience in an EHS or Health & Safety role, including involvement in EHS improvement initiatives.
  • Pharmaceutical industry experience is advantageous.
