Senior Electronic Design Engineer
Platform Recruitment is looking for a Senior Electronic Design Engineer
Job description
Senior Baseband Engineer
Salary: £65,000 – £85,000
Location: Cambridge (onsite, 5 days per week)
Type: Full-time, Permanent
My client is a specialist technology organisation developing mission-critical communication products used across safety-critical and regulated environments worldwide. As part of continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Senior Baseband Engineer to play a key role in the design and development of next-generation hardware platforms.
This position sits within a highly skilled baseband hardware team and offers full lifecycle involvement, from early concept and specification through detailed design, verification, and product release.
The Role
The Senior Baseband Engineer will take technical ownership of significant subsystems and features within complex communication products. The role requires a hands-on engineer who is comfortable operating in regulated environments, contributing to both detailed hardware design and system-level verification.
You will collaborate closely with verification, software, RF, and mechanical teams, contributing to robust, compliant designs used in demanding real-world conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design intrinsic safety (IS) circuitry for ATEX-certified products, including current-limiting, infallible connections, encapsulation, and thermal management.
- Develop microprocessor-based systems integrating multiple sensors such as accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, proximity sensors, and barometers.
- Design efficient, low-power power-supply architectures suitable for harsh operating environments.
- Design and validate audio amplifier circuits up to 10 W, optimised for clarity, efficiency, and reliability.
- Lead design verification and system-level testing, including EMC compliance activities.
- Diagnose non-conformances and implement corrective design solutions.
- Produce clear, structured engineering documentation including specifications, design descriptions, and compliance artefacts.
- Take responsibility for delivering defined product features or major subsystems within larger programmes.
- Collaborate across disciplines to support full product lifecycle delivery.
Skills & Experience Required
- Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or related engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Proven experience designing products for ATEX or intrinsically safe environments.
- Strong understanding of intrinsic safety principles and regulatory compliance pathways.
- Expertise in microprocessor-based hardware design and low-power system architectures.
- Strong experience with serial interfaces such as I²C, I²S, UART, and USB (USB 3.0 advantageous).
- Excellent written communication skills and ability to produce high-quality technical documentation.
- Confident working across design, verification, and cross-functional engineering teams.
Desirable Experience
- EMC and ESD-robust design experience from component to system level.
- Integration of baseband and RF functional blocks within mixed-signal systems.
- Audio system design experience, particularly low-power amplifier solutions.
- Exposure to embedded Linux environments, board bring-up, or driver integration.
What’s on Offer
- £65k–£85k salary
- Fully onsite role in Cambridge
- Opportunity to work on mission-critical communication technologies
- Full lifecycle hardware ownership and technical influence
- Collaborative, engineering-led environment with long-term career progression
