Contract Principal Electronics Engineer

Bristol based (Four days a week onsite)

Six months contract

Inside IR35 - £60 p/h

SC clearance is essential (UK Eyes only project)


A leading Defence client are currently looking for an security cleared (SC) experienced Principal level Electronics Engineer for a Six-month contract opportunity to play a key technical role within a high-technology engineering environment delivering complex electronic systems for advanced sensor and communication applications.


This is a broad, hands-on role where you’ll work across the full product lifecycle from early concept and design through to production support and fielded systems. You’ll be a technical authority within the electronics domain, influencing current and future designs while mentoring and developing others in the team.


Key skills:

  • Experience working across a product development lifecycle in a high-technology or regulated environment
  • Hands-on expertise in high-speed digital hardware design, from schematic capture through component selection and documentation
  • Practical experience with PCB prototyping, bring-up, test and fault-finding
  • Working knowledge of signal and power integrity, EMC and grounding best practice
  • Experience designing with FPGAs, microcontrollers, DDR and Flash memory
  • Familiarity with modelling, simulation and structured design review processes
  • Ability to communicate complex technical solutions clearly in written reports
  • A degree in Electronics Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to work closely with mechanical, systems and software teams


What you’ll be responsible for

  • Designing and developing mixed-technology electronic designs using microcontrollers, CPLDs and/or FPGAs interfacing with RF and analogue circuitry
  • Implementing digital interfaces including Ethernet, CAN, I2C, SPI and RS422, plus high-speed optical and Ethernet links
  • Designing power and control boards to demanding safety and environmental standards (including DO-160-level requirements)
  • Supporting electronics through development, qualification, early-life production and field support
  • Producing clear technical documentation, design justifications and test reports
  • Participating in design reviews and contributing to system-level engineering decisions
