Job description
Battery Energy Storage System Engineer
Grid Scale BESS Asset Performance
Location: Remote UK with travel to UK and Ireland sites as required
Department: Asset Management and Technology
Reports to: Head of Asset Management and Technology
The Opportunity
- An established and rapidly scaling battery energy storage asset owner is expanding its internal technical capability within its Asset Management and Technology function.
- This is a pure operational grid scale BESS role. The focus is on live asset performance, troubleshooting, optimisation and technical authority across operational projects. The organisation owns and operates utility scale battery assets and is building deeper internal technical expertise rather than outsourcing performance optimisation.
- This is not an EPC delivery role and not a consultancy position. It sits directly within the asset owner environment and is focused on long term portfolio performance.
- The role is remote first, with initial travel to meet the team and periodic site visits thereafter.
The Role
- As BESS Engineer you will act as the technical authority for operational battery energy storage assets within the portfolio.
- You will work closely with O and M partners, commercial teams and route to market providers to ensure assets are performing safely, reliably and optimally.
Key responsibilities include:
- Act as technical expert across grid scale BESS assets
- Provide day to day technical support for operational battery sites
- Troubleshoot issues across BESS systems, Power Conversion Systems, transformers, PPC and SCADA
- Lead and coordinate root cause investigations and corrective actions
- Monitor system health and analyse SCADA and RTM data
- Identify trends, inefficiencies and performance optimisation opportunities
- Support battery degradation modelling and lifecycle performance analysis
- Interface with BESS suppliers and integrators regarding specifications and performance
- Support commissioning activities and technical reviews where required
- Contribute to asset optimisation strategies and warranty performance management
- Produce performance reporting and technical documentation
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking candidates with genuine operational exposure to grid scale battery energy storage assets.
You will likely bring:
- Experience working on operational BESS projects at utility scale
- Hands on exposure to SCADA systems and performance monitoring platforms
- Experience troubleshooting PPC and BESS control systems
- Involvement in root cause analysis and fault resolution
- Understanding of lithium ion battery performance and degradation
- Knowledge of PCS, transformers and grid integration
- Experience working alongside O and M providers and suppliers
- Strong technical judgement and ability to operate independently
- Experience in renewable energy, utilities or energy storage is essential.
- An engineering degree is desirable but relevant operational experience is equally valued.
The Environment
- The business is a scaling storage platform operating significant grid scale BESS capacity across the UK and Ireland.
- The culture is technically driven and commercially aware. The Asset Management and Technology function works closely with trading and commercial teams to ensure assets are optimised for both performance and revenue.
- This is an opportunity to move into a deeper technical authority role within a portfolio owner environment.
Package
- Competitive salary depending on experience
- Performance related bonus
- Remote first working model
- Travel to sites as required
