EC&I Engineering Manager
Manchester area | Full-Time | Hybrid
Are you an experienced Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) professional ready to step into a strategic leadership role within a growing multidisciplinary consultancy?
We’re seeking an EC&I Engineering Manager to lead and develop our EC&I discipline while remaining hands-on in project delivery. This is a rare opportunity to shape a department, influence business growth, and work on high-value projects across the whisky distilling, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors.
The Opportunity:
This is a dual-role position combining:
- Technical authority
- Department leadership
- Commercial influence
- Client engagement
In the early phase, you’ll spend approximately 80% of your time on fee-earning project work, transitioning toward a broader strategic focus as the department grows.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Department Leadership
- Line manage a team of engineers, designers, and an apprentice
- Balance workloads, track milestones, and lead weekly team reviews
- Conduct one-to-ones and performance appraisals
- Drive recruitment, mentoring, and long-term capability building
- Define and monitor KPIs to ensure performance and quality
Technical & Project Delivery
- Act as EC&I discipline lead and design authority
- Oversee and approve Electrical, Instrumentation & Control deliverables
- Ensure compliance with UK & EU regulations
- Provide oversight on:
- Hazardous area design (ATEX / BS EN 60079)
- Functional safety (BS EN 61511)
- GMP project requirements
- Lead internal and client design reviews
- Support planning, cost estimation, and risk mitigation
Commercial & Client Engagement
- Contribute to proposal development and manhour estimates
- Attend client meetings and site visits
- Build long-term client relationships
- Identify growth opportunities within ongoing projects
- Promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
What We’re Looking For:
Essential:
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline)
- Strong background in EC&I within process industries
- Experience leading engineering teams
- Proven ability to act as technical lead/design authority
- Commercial awareness and proposal input experience
- Confident communicator with clients and stakeholders
Desirable:
- Functional Safety knowledge (BS EN 61508 / 61511)
- TUV certification (or similar)
- ATEX / BS EN 60079 experience
- CompEx qualification (or similar)
