Lead Automation Engineer (Contract)
Location: Nailsea, UK
Duration: 12 Months

Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Automation Engineer to drive the technical delivery of control systems projects. This role involves full ownership of the software development lifecycle — from specification and design through to global coordination and site testing. You will combine hands-on automation expertise with technical leadership to ensure projects are delivered on time and in line with regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership
- Manage daily engineering activities to ensure technical milestones are achieved
- Provide progress updates, resource tracking, and planning input
Engineering Documentation & Ownership
- Develop and own critical technical documentation including:
- Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
- Software Requirements Specifications (SRS)
- Software Design Documents (SDD)
- Interface Specifications
- System Test Procedures
Global Collaboration
- Work closely with international engineering teams
- Ensure deliverables meet contract specifications and local regulatory standards
- Support cross-project technical standardization
Testing & Quality Assurance
- Lead regional testing activities
- Oversee interface closures and implementation of corrective actions
- Support client technical audits
Supply Chain Support
- Provide technical guidance for procurement and subcontractor activities
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to project close-outs and lessons learned sessions
- Support engineering process enhancements
Candidate Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Automation Engineering
- Proven experience delivering small-to-mid scale automation projects
Technical Expertise
- Strong PLC & HMI experience
- Experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT (Soft PLC) – preferred
- Experience with Ignition SCADA – preferred
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle and version control

- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent documentation and reporting skills
- Ability to work across multidisciplinary and international teams
- Proactive and adaptable approach
