Job description

Principal Research Engineer – Cryogenics

Bristol, UK (Hybrid)

Full-Time

Shape the Future of Sustainable Aerospace

We are seeking an exceptional Principal Research Engineer – Cryogenics to lead the development of next-generation cryogenic electrical power distribution systems for hydrogen-powered aerospace applications.

This is a rare opportunity to work at the forefront of sustainable aviation, driving MW-class cryogenic power technologies from early-stage research (TRL 1) through validation and system integration (TRL 6). You will play a critical role in defining technical strategy, influencing long-term technology roadmaps, and translating breakthrough research into certifiable aerospace systems.

The Opportunity

As a technical authority in cryogenic systems, you will:

  • Lead system architecture and component design for cryogenic-electrical power distribution (20K–70°C)
  • Drive development of MW-class superconducting/high-current systems
  • Own system requirements, safety assessments, and certification strategy (including DO-160 compliance)
  • Define materials, design principles, and scalable technology solutions
  • Lead validation, verification, and qualification activities
  • Chair design reviews and provide technical governance across multidisciplinary teams
  • Mentor engineers and grow internal cryogenic capability
  • Shape and protect intellectual property aligned to long-term hydrogen propulsion strategy

What We’re Looking For

  • BEng (or equivalent) with 8+ years’ relevant experience
  • Strong grounding in thermodynamics and mechanical principles
  • Proven experience in cryogenic system development and integration
  • Experience with superconducting or high-current power systems
  • Understanding of material behaviour in cryogenic environments
  • Experience across full product lifecycle (concept to certification)
  • Knowledge of safety assessments, risk evaluation, and airworthiness requirements
  • Ability to lead complex technical programmes and cross-functional teams

Why Join?

  • Hybrid working (Bristol-based)
  • Competitive salary + performance bonus
  • Industry-leading pension scheme
  • Private medical and life assurance
  • Flexible working hours (including early Friday finish)
